We have visited the theatre in December for each of the last 8 years, enjoying a wide range of excellent family friendly plays. Swallows and Amazons this year, and it was brilliant! Can't rate this highly enough, we have enjoyed every show we have seen.

After a bracing walk out to Friars Crag on a sunny but cold December day we were in dire need of some hot food and drink. Rather than walk back into the busy Keswick town centre we were tempted by the cafe inside the theatre building. Even here was busy - every man and his dog was out and about that day! As the meals are obviously freshly prepared to order, we did have to wait about a half hour before our order arrived - but it was well worth waiting for. Nicely presented by pleasant staff, we tucked into delicious Cumberland sausage on a roll with a nicely dressed side green leaf salad accompanied by a cup of tasty butternut squash soup - just the job! A soothing cafe latte completed our meal. A nice, clean, well run establishment that compliments the lovely little theatre.

For some years, there was a theatre in a kind of prefabricated box near the car park, along the road. People used to come from miles around to watch the varied programme of excellent productions and the company quickly built up an enviable reputation.

Lottery funding, along with support from worthies like Melvyn Bragg and Judi Dench prepared the way for a wonderful, new building, literally on the edge of Derwentwater and the result is a magnificent theatre in what must be the most unusual, yet glorious position in the country.

It is fair to say that some locals questioned the sense in putting a theatre in such a relatively isolated place. "How would they make it pay?", many asked. But the doubters were wrong and to this day, every performance is a virtual sell-out.

Along with the main auditorium, there is a smaller studio, together with a cafe and restaurant. The programme is varied to suit all tastes and includes drama, comedy films and all manner of entertainment genres.

The attractive, modern building is fully accessible for anyone with a disability.

A superbly situated theatre which never shrinks from putting on lesser known productions alongside the more popular attractions. The cast are always excellent and the sets superb. It is an arts facility of which Keswick can be proud and which all residents and visitors should cherish.

We attended on the last Saturday of this years run of See how they Run, and produced a cracking little farce with timing spot on. Even though the jokes were designed for a war weary London crowd, most were still just as relevant even now 70 years on!

Great theatre, great value, superb locally produced food and drink - what more can you ask!
