It is 20 years since I was in boarding school in south africa but oh how quickly it all came back! We felt like an inconvenience to the "host" rather than welcomed paying guests. It is all rules and cufews. No help with bags - food mediocre - no better than I would russle up after work. You have to order dinner hours in advance! The room was big but had no shower and weirdly had school books on the bookshelves in the room. I would have killed for a shower after a day on the mountains but made do with an impossible to regulate hose over a bath. Probably the worst was the passive aggressive host who pretends to welcome criticism but got angry when we made a small negative comment. I see this is reflected on this site too by his reaction to any negative reviews. His time would be better spent improving service rather than composing insulting catty retorts. It must be easy buy "Michelin recommendations'. Oh - it took 20 mins for the credit card machine to work. shame. It could be nice.

The value of this review is neatly summed up by the reviewers reckless defamation of both Michelin and us. 'Buying' inclusion in the Michelin Guide?!

We came here after having a bad experience at The Swallow Hotel (Carlise) which was dirty and dated!

The owners here were very accomadating and we got to lovely rooms.

We had the 'housekeepers room' which was more modern and very much to our liking. The view out into the garden was lovely and so peaceful. The room was clean and spacious with and really nice bathroom! The bed was comfy and I had one of the best nights sleep ever.

Then to wake up to a lovely breakfast and very friendly waitress! The breakfast, although early, was plentiful and tasty and the poached egg, cooked to perfection, I am actually glad the breakfast was early as it set you up for the day!

The area around the hotel was peaceful and tranquil with great views. About 15 mins walk from the center. When we went out I was a bit wary of leaving my room key hanging on the hooks, however had no problems and quickly realised this is a safe hotel. We ended up coming home late one night and the owner had to open the door for us, but he was fine, actually felt a little sorry for him doing this!

Thank you for a lovely stay :)

Thank you for your review. It would be good to see you again. Next time we'll make sure you have the digital code to access the hotel after midnight. We were pleased that you were having such a good time in Keswick that you lost track of the time and it wasn't past our bedtime!

Very good hotel at a quiet location, on a 10 minute walk from the centre of the lovely town of Keswick. The owner is very friendly and makes time for his guests, and his wife serves a very good breakfast. The hotel has a nice garden. My room was very nice and was well equiped. The building itself has much history. There is a small library in the hotel with books you can read while you're there. If you're going to climb hills, you can leave your itinerary behind at the hotel. In case you're missing, action will be taken. A very good and sympathetic initiative, especially for solitary walkers like myself.

We have just returned from a lovely two night stay at the Lairbeck. We had a gorgeous, large double room which was spotlessly clean. We ate in the hotel on the first night and the meal, and breakfasts, were absolutely delicious. We were made to feel very welcome by the lovely owners and staff. We would highly recommend and hope to return. The location is great, close enough to walk to the town centre but away from the hustle and bustle.

My wife and I walked the Cumbrian way in June 2012 and used this hotel as our start/finish base. We left our car there for the 4 days of our hike at no cost which was helpful and kind of the owner. The hotel fabric is of a high quality with expensive furnishings and fittings, at least in our room which was large and very comfortable. However it must be said that the prices of both the room and the dinner are fully up to London levels.

More disappointing was the fact that we were left with that subtle but distinct impression that we were not entirely welcome. This feeling is difficult to justify and describe explicitly but is well known to frequent travellers. A combination of things said, things not said, the general tone of house rules etc. all serve to give one the impression that they are doing you a favour rather than welcoming a valued guest.

As this guest says they had four nights free parking and booked a one night stay in one of our deluxe rooms at the end of their trek. They caused problems at check-in claiming they had booked a double bed configuration when their confirmation clearly showed a twin. Having booked a four course dinner in advance at £23.50 each they cancelled half an hour before dinner and were not charged despite the fact that the preparation of their meal was underway. I hope I wasn't too subtle in making it clear that we won't welcome them back to Lairbeck.

We stayed here for 2 nights and found it to be excellent, convenient to find and within a pleasant walking distance into Keswick itself. The owner was very friendly as were the staff, especially so as I became ill shortly after arriving, nothing to do with the hotel I hasten to add. Everyone was very kind and keen to help out. Meals were superb and our room was charming with good views and a four-poster bed. I'm so glad we booked to stay here and would definately recommend it.
