“Gastropub with great food and fun staff.”
Reviewed July 24, 2014

We loved our dining experience at this fun, lively, historic and authentic gastropub located in the historic center of Keswick, England. The food alone makes it worth the visit, but also go for the ambiance, for the people watching, to interact with the friendly staff.

“Great watering hole”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

Most nights we finished off with a couple of drinks in this well furnished pub. Good value and friendly staff and, if you are still hungry, good choice of nibbles.

“Great old inn for a couple of pints, but its famous "Giant Cow Pies" not enough to recommend the kitchen”
Reviewed July 17, 2014

Yes, the pies are gigantic, even beyond the hype printed on the menu. But, unless you're into sheer poundage, the food here is really only quite average. The inn itself is pretty amazing, the oldest such place in town, and originally the George & Dragon, until George 1 ascended the throne and the Dragon was removed from the title so as not to give offense to his highness. Very cool little snug of a pub with good local beers and ales on tap, a bit pricey but fair enough given this is a tourist town and its the high season. My wife ordered the half pie and we could have both made two meals of that one dish! Beware, however, that the "short crust" really just means a doughy, mushy crust and not a lovely, light, flaky one like you hope for in pub pies. I had the Englishman's Delight, a chicken breast stuffed with venison sausage and wrapped in streaky bacon, but it had been overcooked to the point of resembling a hockey puck, which kind of defeats the point of stuffing it on the inside and wrapping it with bacon on the outside. Fries were delicious, despite being a bit over-cooked and soggy. Lovely people working in here, delightful young lady serving us and a jolly, friendly man tending bar and supervising the till. Bottom line is I'd highly recommend it for the atmosphere and a pint or two lingering with friends, but can't really recommend dining here.
