“So good we visited twice!!”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We enjoyed two wonderful meals at The George. I had the Haggis fritters twice they where that good, my wife enjoyed the garlic mushrooms as well, this time I skipped the Cow pie and went for the pheasant and my wife had the country pie, both excellent and a highlight of our meals in Keswick. The second visit was just as good, the service as always very good and the food excellent. My wife went for the I had the Lamb George and the meat melted in my mouth it was that good, we skipped desert both times and had a local ice cream whilst walking off dinner.

We would recommend The George as a great pub meal.

“Good pub food in an atmospheric pub”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

Decent service (female restaurant staff was more attentive than male).
Food was good and the 2 main course veggie options were a little over-cooked but tasty.

“Nice place that allows dogs ...”
Reviewed June 12, 2014 via mobile

We called here on 11th June with a dog .... Dogs are only allowed in the bar area which means there are only 6 tables to choose from and when busy that could mean a long wait!!!
However we got a table straight away .... The cow pie is infamous and gigantic .... Overall it was nice

“Massive Cow & Farmhouse Pies - Only attempt them if your VERY hungry!”
Reviewed June 8, 2014

There were 10 of us (5 couples) looking for somewhere different to eat (we have been to Keswick many many times) and wanted to try somewhere we hadn't eaten before and we heard about the famous George cow pies so we thought we would give it a go.

The bar area was clean and tidy and the bar staff were very pleasant as well - thank you, however, when we went to see if we could book a table (for 10 so it was going to be a fairly large bill) the lady in the restaurant was not interested, it was like "this is going to be too much work". We said we didn't mind what time it was and would even accept being split up e.g. 6 and a 4 as we appreciated a table for 10 at short notice was asking a lot. But the customer service was lacking. There was a table for 8 and we asked if we could add a chair at each end and was told no. However, the lady did get us a booking for 9PM but we would be split up. When we came back we were told it was split over 3 separate tables and would have meant one of the couples also being split up, not a good move really. We were shown the 3 tables and they were all in the same area next to each other but no offer to push them together, so we did it ourselves!

The same lady who made our reservation also took our food and drinks order, no problems everyone got what they ordered and pretty quickly as well, thank you, but there was very little in the way of smiles :-(, not rude but could have gone that little extra and smiled a bit more.

Right, the food, OMG, we all decided to go for half portions (some of us had Cow & some had Farmhouse), wise move, because the half portions were massive, no chance of eating a full portion unless your VERY hungry. The pies were fantastic as was the chips, mash and chunky veg. Try them, you won't be disappointed!

“Good food and service - but the ambience wasn't great”
Reviewed June 8, 2014

We ate in the restaurant. I had the pulled pork, and my wife had fish and chips.

Suffice to say that the food and service were first-rate. A little slow, perhaps, but then it was a busy Saturday evening.

The problems were entirely outwith the remit of the staff, and were to do with the room itself; firstly, it was far, far too warm, and didn't seem ventilated at all. Secondly, the décor was awful; a combination of chintz and kitsch that wasn't particularly nice or interesting to look at. Finally, and this is a complaint I've never made before because I've never actually noticed the chairs in a restaurant before - the chairs were really uncomfortable! They had high arms on them that made it impossible to find a comfortable place for your elbows whilst you were eating.

A shame - because, as I said at the beginning, the food and service really was very good.
