“Aladdins cave”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2013

I visited Keswick with a friend on the Sunday after Christmas , a sunny but cold day. After a walk around we were in need of a cup of tea and a cake and from across the road we saw the shop Temporary Measures which advertised a cafe as well as the shop. Inside was an eclectic mix of Lloyd loom chairs and coffee tables just waiting for someone to sit down and drink tea! There were a few groups in already but we were able to bag a couple of chairs and ordered sticky toffee cake and a scone with Earl Grey tea. It came on delicate china and was delicious.Looking around the shop there were fabulous prints on the wall for sale and books and cards a bit different from the norm. What really held our interest were the knitted toys and baby bootees and shoes as we have a grandchild on the way. They could either be bought ready knitted or in kit form which include needles wool, stuffing, buttons etc. We purchased a kit of each. The wool is available in many colours and the owner was very obliging as we wanted to get colours for either sex of baby not blue or pink! She was very helpful and when I said I had never knitted on four needles before said I could ring her mum and she would talk me through it! How kind is that?! We can't wait to get started on the projects and hope to return to the shop soon.

Followed advice from trip advisor and found this gem of a place!
Comfy sofa, excellent coffee and cakes and interesting surroundings. Do go in with your pooch where others refuse you!
Will return soon.

“I plan to have a visit to temporary measure every time I visit the Lake District”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

We stumbled into Temporary Measure, desperate for a cup of tea after our first (unsuccessful) attempt to get to the top of Skiddaw. It was exactly what we were dreaming of whilst we battled with the cold and wind on the mountain. The cafe had a lovely, arty atmosphere and we immediately felt comfortable and relaxed. We ended up getting more than just a lovely cup of tea and cake. We bought cards and wool and were inspired to arrange our 'save the dates' and wedding invites thanks to Emma's brilliant, creative talents. (If it wasn't for accidentally stumbling on this place our engagement might have lasted another 4 years!)

“Simply Fabulous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2013

My friends and I stumbled upon Temporary Measures by sheer coincidence while visiting Keswick for the weekend and returned 3 times in a 24 hour period to soak in more of its charm and buy more lovely things!!

From having a little knitting lesson from the ever wonderful Mum, bags of encouragement from the very talented Emma and enjoying a delicious hot chocolate on a squishy sofa, while listening to fab music by her Brother; it was certainly the highlight of our trip.

We stayed up until 1 in the morning, knitting our bunny's while trying to decide if it was a little rash to move to the Lakes simply so we could visit more often.

Such a treat, in more ways than one - thank you

“A welcome interlude in a sea of outdoor shops”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2013

The great British Outdoors! Fresh mountain air and stunning scenery. If this is all you need then head for the English Lake district. However if your needs also include decent coffee and a bit of surreal humour then make sure you stop at this coffee shop.

Others have commented on the art and décor - it is eclectic. Part craft shop, part art store, part living room, it would be easy to confuse this with other typical tourist stops in Keswick. Don't be fooled. Under the soft and woolly exterior beats the heart of a surrealist so "out there", they make Dali look understated.

Some people wont get it. Others, confused and scared will write rubbish on review sites. But for those who "get it" fantastic coffee, lovely cakes, friendly non intrusive, non bland service... and if you are really good a badge! (assuming I was really good, and not that they wanted to get rid of me)

...the word on the streets is bring on the black hole....

Thanks
