“Great food, good value, with eccentric atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2012

Have been to this place several times and the food has always been great- they do a set menu of either 2 or 3 courses which is good quality, good value with plenty of veg/potato to go with the main. Wine choice is either white, red or rose- which we all liked as it limited the fuss over what to drink. It is only a small restaurant- fits about 20 people and the service is a little slow but this fits in with the individual atmosphere of the place along with all the trinkets and knick-knacks for sale. If you are after Michelin star typed dining stay away. If you would like good value, great eating in an individually run, family owned type restauranut then this is for you!! I'll be back again for sure!

“Very disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2012

My partner and I visited 17 Again in March. It was the first day of our holiday and it was a sour start to the holiday.

On a plus note, the vegetarian options weren't listed on the menu the chef was very helpful in talking us through what the vegetarian dishes of the day were. The cafe is really pretty, with lots of thought put into the interior. The food was tasty and interesting. I really wanted to love this cafe.

The cafe was nearly full and the service was very slow, with one waitress serving everybody. We were sat next to the kitchen door and the waitress obviously doesn't
enjoy her job. It made us feel a bit uncomfortable as we could hear her complaining to the chef in the kitchen. In fairness it was very busy, but that's part of the job when you're a waitress.

When we got our bill we were shocked at how expensive our food was as we'd only ordered a main meal each and 2 drinks. As our menu had been taken away we couldn't check the prices and didn't think to ask, assuming it was just expensive Lake District prices. It was only the next day when we walked past the cafe again and looked at the menu on the window we realised we had been considerably overcharged (we had been charged for two course dinner when we only had a main each) . The cafe was shut or I would have asked for a refund. I tried to call a few times to discuss this but didn't get a reply. I'm kicking myself because in hindsight I realised that one of the comments the waitress made in the kitchen (something like 'are you charging for both even though they only had that?') was probably about us but I hadn't paid any attention to it at the time. Of course the comment could have been about something else, but it makes sense it was about us. From looking at the menu they may have charged for two courses because the main meals aren't priced separately, but it hardly seems fair. If they had informed us we would have chosen desserts.

“What a gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2012

We went in for dessert but ended up ordering an entree as well. The owner was very friendly and gave us extra vegies which were lovely! He was a very good host and it ended up been a very plesent evening. As we were the only customers that night (no relfection on the restrauant- it was winter and a week night!) we had a good time trading travelling stories!

“Felt like Alice in Wonderland!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2012

This place was a great find. At first we thought it was just a cute shop with pretty little trinkets but it's a cafe too! The owner (didn't catch his name) was very friendly and brought out complimentary vegies and potatoes to go with our meals. I'd definitely recommend this cafe to groups of girls who want something different!

“Tea and tut.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2012

Ever wondered what it would be like to drink tea inside Barbara Cartlands head? then this is the place for you! If you gussy yourself up for a slightly surreal experience then I would not be surprised if you end up having a nice time.

Pretty much every square millimetre of shelf or floor space in the restaurant has some sort of decorative item placed upon it, tiny statues of sheep, dangly fairies, decorative items made out of plastic berries, quilted fabric decorative items of indiscernible application, if you like to look as stuff while you sip your tea then you will love it, if you are of a minimalist persuasion then you will feel like the walls are trying to eat you.

On the positive side the service here is always excellent and the selection of food on offer is better than you would expect to find in most places of its size, The last time I went in for lunch the cake and toastie I had were both delicious though the salad garnish that came with the toastie had seen better days.
