I regularly review for TripAdvisor and do not lightly give negative reports but this cottage is the worst we have ever booked. I cannot understand the rankings given by the 2 other reviewers of this property on a “related site”. Firstly, when we arrived the place had not been cleaned, there was a bin liner of rubbish behind the door, empty wine bottles on the surfaces, beds unmade etc,. The waste bins in the individual rooms were full. The “lounge” which was the size of a box bedroom smelt of years of wet dog and decay. The only accurate part of the previous reviews was the description of the sofa - which was totally touching the floor and devoid of effective springs- and the fact there was modern equipment in the bathroom and kitchen. Upstairs there was a large wardrobe along one side of the larger bedroom which had been used to store very old equipment ( iron, high chair, old mattress etc.) in a totally haphazard way covered in old blankets. The spare bedding was stacked in a chaotic way.
The house is back to back, adjacent to the main road and at the end of the row. The property is on the outskirts of Keswick and certainly more than a 5 minute walk away from the centre.
We were so disgusted we rang the letting agency and said the place was not fit for purpose and we wanted to move. At first they were resistant and contacted the cleaner who, when she arrived, confirmed our view that the house was horrible. She had been unwell and not been in to clean. She agreed however that the problems were not just about the immediate cleaning problem but about the general state of the property.
Eventually, the letting agency agreed to relocate us (and the property we moved to was very good) but we felt they should have reacted more promptly to our concerns. If we had been less insistent, they would have been quite happy for us to wait 2 hours for the property to have been cleaned and to have soldiered on.
Later, when we discussed it with them, their explanation for the poor quality of the property was that it was not one of “their own” properties but one they managed on behalf of an owner and that they had not done a recent inspection of the property. I regard the distinction as irrelevant – if a property is listed by a company, they have to accept responsibility for the quality of service provided. However, they said they would undertake an inspection the following day.
Until the property is fully upgraded I could not recommend anyone using it. If you want to be reasonably close to Keswick, the location is inconvenient although it probably is within 5 to 10 minutes walk of the Leisure Centre.
Don’t risk spoiling your holiday by staying here !
I also think it is misleading for TripAdvisor to allow reviews “from our trusted partner sites” ( Flipkey Holiday Lettings) to be used to advertise properties which have not been reviewed by TripAdvisor users themselves. We certainly had assumed the reviews had been posted directly on TripAdvisor . In future, I will check this out more carefully.
