“A cosy place and great pizza”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

Having visited The Square Orange for a coffee a few times, we've always fancied eating there but as it's such a small place, it's usually difficult to find a table in the height of the summer. So on a cold Tuesday night in November we managed to get a table in this cosy cafe bar. There was a warm welcome on arrival and we were soon enjoying a bottle of wine and pizzas. The pizzas were excellent - exceptionally thin and flavoursome, and the wine was quite good too for the price. The bar is quite European in style, very cosy and has a good atmosphere. The choice of food is quite limited but if you are just after a pizza or tapas, I would highly recommend.

“a little find”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

Have no idea how long this place has been in Keswick but somehow after living in the area for years we only managed to stumble into it today. An amazing little place! We couldn't decide whether the decor was dated but who cares? It was warm, inviting, a kind of European local cafe meets Glastonbury boho - a million miles from the cosy Keswick tearoom chintz (though not knocking that - we've had many a fine cuppa and cake in those) The 2 tapas were generously sized and served with warm ciabatta, and I don't think many places serve a small glass of perfectly decent Spanish plonk for £2.30- so a perfectly satisfying light lunch for 2 for not much more than 12 quid. Good music - 60's/ Doors kind of stuff. The young lady serving us was lovely, the chap behind the bar efficient but more smiles wouldn't have gone amiss, but overall a nice experience, and we'll definitely give it another go.

“Five stars one night, one star the next”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013 via mobile

When you walk into this bar it's difficult to believe you're in the Lake District. It's a mixture of Belgian and Spanish decor, with a good range of wines and bottled beers, tapas and pizzas. We first visited on a Tuesday. The welcome couldn't have been warmer. The barman cleared a table for us and brought our drinks and a couple of tapas over. Later on we ordered a pizza, which was delicious - we wished we'd had one each instead of sharing. Followed it with some banana and chocolate cake with cream.
We'd enjoyed our evening so much that we returned on the Wednesday. What a difference. The friendly barman had been replaced by a lady who, when we asked if a table might become available soon, replied that we could share one, 'that's what we do here, we socialise, they don't bite'. We said we'd rather wait for our own table - there doesn't seem much point in going out for a meal as a couple if you have to share your conversation with people you don't know - so we sat at the bar near the friendly (and excellent) chef. After 20 minutes it became clear that a table wasn't going to come free, especially as a group of people came in and appeared to be about to take up any spare seats there were, so we decided to leave. The lady behind the bar ignored our request to pay until the person she was about to serve pointed out to her that we were waiting to do so.
We understand that the bar is only small, with limited seating available, but this doesn't mean that customers should be treated rudely if they're not willing to share a table, and perhaps some sort of short-term reservation system would be sensible so that people who do decide to wait for a table know that they are next in line when one becomes available.
We would visit Square Orange again but would check who was behind the bar first.

“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

After having an overpriced and average tasting meal at a local restaurant we made our way to this bar, having spotted a sign for a cheese board in the window earlier, and we're glad we did. There was an interesting selection of cheese on offer and an equally interesting wine list. Delicious, all of it! We happily sat for a couple of hours here; the ambience was relaxed and the staff were friendly. It felt quite continental, like we were in a cool Paris suburb. It was a little gem to find and I'd definitely recommend it for a late night drink. We'll definitely go back, looking forward to trying the pizzas next time.

“Great little cafe with a laid-back atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013

We visited this cafe bar twice during a long weekend visit. Staff are really friendly and great service. Good atmosphere and attracted people of all ages. Laid-back and slightly 'boho' atmosphere. Lovely wines and beers, and a couple of great mojitos, which we hadn't tried before. Their pizzas looked really nice too. A great place for a late night drink stop after a meal out. French/Spanich bar style decor. We will definately return when we're next in Keswick.
