“Lovely Retreat”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

Recently spent 3 nights here, purposely for relaxation and walking. Very pleased with our choice, very friendly, not fussy, but excellent service. On first approach main hotel looks a bit tired, we booked a dog friendly room in the "Cottage" which was fine and of a good size, wasn't expecting 5 star room, but comfortable and clean, king size bed, room easily accessible with a four legged friend. One of the highlights were the views from the restaurant along with all the wildlife, in addition lots of walks on the doorstep. On top of all this I need to stress how the excellent the evening meals were, could not fault in anyway, great choice, good size of meals, presentation, always hot, and very pleasant service by all. I would definitely recommend and we will be visiting again.

We spent three nights here in March and found it an ideal location. The evening meal was excellent, even better than some 5 star hotels we have stayed in and great value. Service was extremely quick, and efficient. The staff were attentive but the only thing we found strange, was once we were seated for our evening meal, we then had to go to the bar to order. It would have been nice to have had the order taken at the table. A minor point i know but it's the only thing that we felt could be improved. The restaurant enjoys fabulous views and we paticularly enjoyed watching the birds during breakfast as there were plenty of bird feeders near the windows which attracted a wide variety. The room was spacious and well eqiupped with a lovely large bathroom, all very clean and well maintained and there were various walks we could do from the hotel without having to use the car. All in all, a truly enjoyable break and great value.

We spent 3 nights at this lovely hotel over looking Derwent Water. It has very friendly and helpful staff. Good food for breakfast and in the evenings. Excellent value for money. We took a few peaceful walks around the lake to Keswick and enjoyed the views, then we caught a launch back to the hotel. Fabulous.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed of a very high standard.

I spent two nights here for a special birthday celebration with 28 other family members. Matthew and Cristina at the hotel could not have been more helpful with planning the event from arranging accommodation to providing a special menu for the birthday lunch.
The hotel is in a lovely situation on Derwentwater with great and mountain lake views from the restaurant area.
The staff are helpful and pleasant and go about their work in a very quiet and unobtrusive manner.
The food was very tasty with good size portions for those who have worked up an appetite walking on the hills, and is reasonably priced.
We had a room in the main building which was a good size, clean and warm and generally inviting with a view up the lake to Skiddaw and across to Catbells. I got no complaints from any family members on their rooms although I don't believe all rooms have lake and or mountain views.
This was our first stay here but I am sure we will return.

Owning a dog with separation anxiety means our current holidays or breaks are self catering or at best, B & B's, but here we could leave the car, walk for miles with the dog, indulge in a little retail therapy and then, in the evening, flop down for a pint of excellent real ale, a well cooked meal with our dog happily snoring at our feet. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant, so we ate in the cosy warm bar, where you can,. if you want, chatter away to fellow residents and swap hints on places to visit.

This hotel is lovely. The location is fabulous, the staff, without exception, friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and ours had a great view of the fells. We were sorry to leave, as not for a long time have we had a short break that the 3 of us have so thoroughly enjoyed. A mix of clientele which was nice, and many repeat visitors which tells its own story. We will most definitely return.

Other hotels tale note, we were not the only dog owners at the hotel, all the dogs were well behaved and owners responsible. Yes, you may get the odd idiot, but then again don't you anyway. This hotel has got it spot on for a chilled out holiday and I will recommend this place to dog owners and non dog owners alike.

What a lovely place to stay! We booked for my birthday for a weekend 2 night stay, we took our small dog and stayed in one of the cottages in the grounds. first impressions were "wow look at the views!". The bed was large and very comfy and the view from the little bay window so beautiful, fells all around and views over Derwent water.
Breakfast was served in the conservatory with panoramic views and there are bird feeders all around which are a hive of activity, we even had a nuthatch on the nuts next to our window!service was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. Evening meals were lovely and the log fires were lit as soon as you walked in. Brilliant walks all around and the staff cannot do enough to help, we will be returning very soon! Great place, perfect location and helpful pleasant staff!

Just stayed for one night in exceptionally wet weather. Very good welcome. Super room in new building with great view down Derwent Water. We had our own patio but couldn't use it because it rained non stop!
Super dining room overlooking lake. At breakfast we could watch a wide variety of birds at the bird feeders just outside the window.
Would have liked a longer stay!
Great location for walks straight from the hotel. Easy walk to ferry landing, and bus down Borrowdale passes the door.

Room Tip: Ask for room in new building with window looking down the lake.
