Burleigh Mead Hotel
Ranked #115 of 189 Keswick B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 12, 2011

We had chosen this hotel (yes, more an hotel than a B&B) because of the good reviews on the stunning views. We were very disappointed because we ended with 2 rooms (number 2 and 6) with a view on the back of the hotel (bins, roofs, washing lines).
The lady was just polite but not so friendly. One morning we arrived 5 mns before breakfast was served and she was crossed with that. The other morning she refused to make hot milk for the children ( 2 and 5 years old) ... so not so welcoming. Otherwise the breakfast was delicious.
The rooms are all right, beautiful bathrooms but the beds are awful.
The hotel was quiet and in the center of town.

Room Tip: ask for the suites because they're the ones with great views

This was our first time at Burleigh Mead, having stayed previously in other nearby hotels. It compares most favourably with them and in our opinion, offers good value for money.

In summary, we particularly liked
:
1 The well appointed room with great views of Derwentwater and the surrounding fells.
2 The excellent breakfast.
3 The friendly, helpful and efficient management style of the owner
4 Reasonable room rates ( we saved a packet by stopping here rather than in a hotel ) - plenty of restuarants nearby for our dinner.
5 The availability of off street parking at the rear of the premises
6 Clean and tidy - no fuss, just relaxation.

We found nothing to dislike, apart from no shaver point in the room.

Room Tip: South facing rooms enjoy the best views

We stayed in Burleigh Mead and in Hazeldene (next door) on back-to-back weekends. Since they are fairly similar in style and price, I thought a head-to-head comparison might be interesting.

Owners: We got a very friendly welcome in both places. The owners in Hazeldene come over as being a little more casual and relaxed.
Payment: Burleigh Mead takes cash or cheque; Hazeldene, cash or debit card or (for a 2% surcharge) credit card.
Parking: no real difference
Front gardens: Both gardens nice. Burleigh Mead has chairs and benches for guests, Hazeldene has tables and chairs.
Lounges: Burleigh Mead has a small lounge behind the breakfast room, Hazeldene has a large lounge with nice views across the hall from the breakfast room.
Breakfast: served in Burleigh Mead from 8.30 to 9.15, in Hazeldene from 8 to 9. In BM, room numbers were placed on tables so that people would know where to sit, in H people could choose a table. The scrambled eggs in BM had pepper in them; those in H did not. The bacon in BM was a little salty, but nicely cooked; the bacon in H was a little tougher in texture. BM had 6 cereals on the breakfast bar and 5 different kinds of fruits in bowls; H had 4 cereals and two kinds of fruits in bowls. (To be honest, while Hazeldene’s breakfast buffet was very good, Burleigh Mead’s was one of the best I’ve ever seen in a B&B with a wonderful choice of items.)
Rooms: Rooms and en-suites were very nice in both. While the room in Hazeldene was clean and well furnished, my wife felt that the room in Burleigh Mead was cleaner and the furniture slightly classier. We were in room 5 in Hazeldene, which is east facing, with a better view than that of room 3 in Burleigh Mead which is north facing. (But in both these guesthouses, the best views are from the south facing rooms.) Both our room and bathroom in Hazeldene were lighter and more spacious than the Burleigh Mead equivalents, but the bed in room 3 in Burleigh Mead was wider (6’ as opposed to 5’ in our room in Hazeldene) and the bathroom had more hanging rails and was more modern. Both places had excellent showers.

Conclusion: Not a lot in it really. Both brilliant. Which one you prefer will come down to your own personal preference.

We stayed here for 4 nights while hiking in the Lake District and were fortunate to have the top floor room. The room was 4 floors up and we laughingly called the climb to our room the "Burleigh Mead hike". It was well-worth it because the view from our room was priceless. We never tired of looking out over the lake to the Cat Bells. We had a lovely stay with good breakfasts and Gill was a wonderful hostess and very helpful.

We have stayed in many hotels and guest houses around the World, and the Burleigh Mead Hotel is in our top ten. Sitting in the Burleigh Suite and enjoying the view is a holiday in itself. Everything was just right - we slept well, enjoyed the excellent range of options at breakfast and the level of care and attention was perfect. Highly recommended

A wonderful b and b in the heart of the Lake District. A fine slate mansion with a view. We could look out at the mountain we walked on our second day. Comfortable, quiet, a great location and an excellent breakfast with plenty of healthy options beyond the basics. Gill is a very competent and welcoming host. We were glad that we could stay a third night to enjoy another day in the wonderful lake district.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view to the mountains
