A spectacular drive from Keswick, take Braithwaite turning to go up the Whinlatter Pass, turn right at High Lorton to pass Crummock Water and Buttermere then up Honister Pass the slate mine is at the top. Didn't go in the mine but the shop is stocked with lots of items made from slate, I especially liked the slate water fountains outside the back of the shop, the café is good too and they must have the best loos I have been in! We finished our circular drive down the pass, through Seatoller and up the Borrowdale Valley back to Keswick.

This is quite something, you get to climb up the side of cliffs holding on to metal bars which have been pre-fixed. You are always roped into a wire which follows your route. Absolutely breathtaking exposure and views. We booked a guide through the Glaramara outdoor activity centre nearby, which was very well run with a very safe and knowledgeable guide, very easy to book too as they have web pages and take card payments. This was the undoubted highlight of our stay in the lakes, particularly for our ten year old son.

Today I took a party of 2 adults and 3 children the fifty minute drive from where we were staying near Ullswater to Honister Slate mine.
We'd searched out a good afternoon activity and arrived mid afternoon looking forward to the tour of the mine.
On arrival we were informed that there is only one tour per day in December and January and that we had missed it for today.
Having been on the website that morning to confirm the trip details there was no mention of this made at all.
All in all a very disappointing and wasteful journey that could have been avoided if proper winter opening hours had been updated on the site.
Can't recommend a business that is so poor in its communication.

I have been here a few times for a walk, then a coffee. Always friendly & polite staff, good value too.
