If you are a demanding hotel guest, with expectations of impeccable service and sleek efficiency, for the love of god DO NOT STAY HERE. If however you fancy a stay in a very English, very rambling B&B, then do give this a go. It is like something out of a movie or perhaps even a sitcom - there's something surreal about this place.

It is hugely informal - we spent an afternoon on the squashy sofas in the TV room playing on their ancient set of Trivial Pursuit, being served tea at £3/tray - and the family team here are amiable and easy-going. It's beautifully situated in grounds and is conveniently close to the M6.

Rooms and bathrooms are enormous; amusingly ours included a TV with two armchairs positioned around it.

You could say that it's all in need of updating, or just appreciate the masses of 'period detail' with plenty of fixtures and fittings that date back to the 60s. Crucially, mattress quality was good, the plumbing worked and rooms were clean.

I can't imagine I'll be in the area again any time soon, but would definitely recommend this place to people looking for something a bit different. If you are going to Cartmel / L'Enclume, minicabs are a bit expensive: £25-40 each way.

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with lovely views. The reception rooms have a stately feel to them and our bedroom on the top floor was spacious, had a comfy bed and antique style furniture. The view was very nice. However the place needs updating. Walls were peeling, furniture and carpets were worn, some were dirty looking and had animal hair on them. Our bathroom was very dated, the shower trickled, ran cold then hot.....then stopped altogether. The staff were friendly and tried hard and the food was very good. This hotel has a certain charm and has so much potential. Someone needs to invest or buy it to bring it up to date. Would I recommend it, probably not, it's not to everyone's taste... Would I go back. Possibly!!

There is something about ‘having seen better days’ that pervades the whole hotel. Rickety furniture, creaking floorboards, dodgy plumbing – but clean enough. We enjoyed both an excellent evening meal and the breakfast. Although easily reached from the motorway, there are no shops or bars etc nearby, I’m sure I would have felt ‘trapped’ there if I were to stay more than a night or two. This strikes me as a hotel you will either love or hate. If you want something different to the bland predictability of the budget chain hotels, staying here will certainly be an experience.

I have been to the heaves lots of times for food and I always enjoy it. It is a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. They are always able to satisfy our needs even when we ask for extra roast potatoes as they are sooo good. I think you should deffo try this place. It is lovely and relaxing a lovely place to be and the value is fantastic.

We have been staying at the Heaves for many years and we've never been disappointed. It is ideally located for the Lakes and has excellent parking facilities. We recently stayed in the self catering cottages on the site which are excellent, they are centrally heated and well equipped including free wifi, a cosy retreat from the rain outside.
The grounds are well maintained and are sometimes frequented by deer in the early mornings. This is a really friendly family run hotel and the celebrity chef Paul does a great job.
