We first went to Duke of Cumberland about a year and a half ago - great food and an enjoyable evening out.
Not sure if it's changed hands in this time but things are very different!
It is not unusual in this day and age to find a vegetarian alternative/option for a Sunday roast. Many places offer this. Upon asking if this was the case here, we were greeted with "there's no such thing as vegetarian meat, love" in a very sarcastic tone, from the female member of staff. In all my years of customer service, I have never experienced this sort of unnecessary rudeness; a simple yes or no would have sufficed. By this point, there were three people being the bar and all the patrons staring at us. Feeling bullied into ordering, we ordered. Less than a minute of sitting down, feeling very uncomfortable, we decided that we couldn't stay so asked for our money back, so that we could leave. When asked, we were told that our food was "already half cooked"... after a minute, at most two? I highly doubt that.
The Sunday roast veg was over cooked and the vegetable lasagne was bland, not to mention that portion sizes of both dishes were small.
All in all a very disappointing evening out. We will not be attending again and we will be sure that others know of this unfortunate visit and warn them of the rude staff!
We went in this pub on Sunday whilst visiting Kendal and I have to say we loved it. Great food, great beer, friendly locals and fantastic staff (a special mention has to go to Jez who was brilliant). In fact we enjoyed it that much we returned the following day on our way home!!! Highly recommended and will return when next in the area. Sim and Caroline.
