“Great Little Break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2013

We travelled as a couple and booked on a Travel Zoo deal. All of the staff were very polite and helpful and the food that was served was very good too and plentiful. We were upgraded to a king four poster (room 215), which was a little like a sauna and did become a little uncomfortable during the night. We also found that the cold water tap in the bathroom ran warm for a few minutes before the cold came through. the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and steam room was lovely and relaxing at the most there only being 6 people in the whole area.

Our one night stay was very nice and just what the doctor ordered, yes there were minor faults but for the price we paid we were more than happy with our stay. Infact we enjoyed it that much we are thinking of booking again before the offer ends.

This was the first time that we have used Travelzoo - I can only say ' you get what you pay for'.
We stayed two nights from Wed. the 20th.Nov. arriving on the coldest day of the year so far. We were directed to room 207 - an upgrade to a kingsize 4 poster. It was so cold, the radiators were icy. It was warmer in the corridors. We returned to reception to ask for something to be done and also to request that the only chair be removed as it was broken and unsafe to sit on.(It was never replaced). They suggested that we have a cream tea whilst we waited for the room to warm up.
The scones were warm but had been microwaved and just fell in bits. We didn't bother with the prosecco. By this time we were thinking of going home !! The only good thing about our break were the evening meals which were excellent. The staff were very good in the circumstances - they needed guidance and management, of which there was no sign. Brandon, the young man in charge of the bar worked tirelessly, waiting at tables and doing all manner of things without prompting. On our last morning we were woken at 7.00am by a dreadful noise from a ventilation shaft from the kitchen - we just had to get up and get out. The breakfasts were what you would expect from a buffet breakfast. We would not stay there again. We take regular midweek breaks as we are retired and due to health problems not able to go abroad. I love going to Kendal but there are far better places to stay.

Room Tip: Avoid room 207 !! It is over the kitchen and you will be woken by noise from that ventilation shaft...

My husband and I booked this deal for a Sunday 17th November through Travelzoo which consisted of a king size four poster bed, afternoon tea with prosecco and evening meal and breakfast, all for £99. We thought we would treat ourselves as we had gone away for our anniversary at the end of September but it hadnt been quite as we had wanted so this sounded ideal.

We arrived mid morning in Kendal and had a wander around, it started to rain so we decided to head to the hotel and see if we would be able to check in early as it was only just after 1pm and check in wasnt until 2pm. We parked around the back where there was plenty of parking and went into reception. The lady on reception was very helpful and said that she would check if our room was ready and she said if we would wait five minutes they were just finishing it off. We filled in the check in form and my husband got the overnight bag from the car, by which time the room was ready. We saw the chamber lady who was doing other rooms and she pointed us in the right direction for our and we thanked her for letting us check in early too. As you will see from my photos the room was lovely and we over looked the car park at the rear.

We went back down to reception to sort out our afternoon tea and the receptionist asked would we like our prosecco with it or later, we decided to have it with our afternoon tea. We took a seat on one of the settees and tables in the reception and waited only a matter of a few minutes before our afternoon tea and coffee was served on trays with warm scones and butter and jam and cream. The prosecco then was brought by another waitress moments later. All staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble, they should be praised as so often you go somewhere and you get greeted by people who appear to not want to be there but everyone here seemed like they enjoyed their work which adds to the pleasure of your stay and meals etc so thank you.

After enjoying our lovely afternoon tea we went back up to our room for a while and then decided to use the swimming pool and steam room and jacuzzi. The receptionist had already told us the times of opening which were if I recall up to 9pm and I think from 7am in the morning. Also that you had to sign in at reception and they would supply towels for you, which was great, although we had brought our own it meant we didnt have to use them. There was no one else in the pool when the receptionist showed us to it and explained where everything was. The changing rooms were individual rooms with showers in, lovely! We went into the steam room first then the jacuzzi and then finally the pool and then back to the others. We had a great relaxing time. It was going dark by this time and the jacuzzi is kind of in a conservatory bit with frosted out glass but it has changing light colours which when dark gives a lovely ambiance.

We went back to our room having signed out at reception and handed in our towels. We had choosen to have dinner at 7pm and went down early to the bar, we ordered what we wanted off the menu and were called through to our table when our first course was ready. The waitresses again were very polite and service was very professional. Just made everything feel very special. The food was really very good quality and tasty, Highly recommend the home made sticky toffee pudding!!!

We had a good quality of sleep and breakfast was a buffet style which was very nice. Everyone had seemed to come to breakfast almost at the same time so some of the cooked items were needing replacing but it just a case of waiting a few minutes till more is cooked fresh and brought out, it is better than having it all dried up and crimped because it was cooked all for the start time of breakfast, well that is what I think anyway! Something cooked fresh should not be ready instantly, proper cooking takes time and clearly here they pride themselves on serving quality food.

Would definately recommend and will definately be wanting to go back. Many thanks to all the staff for making our substitute 1st anniversary special.

We stayed for a cheap one night deal through Travelzoo. Enjoyed the cream tea (good, warm scones). Very quiet swim (just us), sauna and jaccuzi. Clean with good changing facilities.

Room was good, dinner particularly good and breakfast good and plentiful.

Staff very pleasant.

We bought our afternoon tea with use of spa on a special deal through travelzoo..
We had the pool to ourselves and made the most of it staying a couple of hours. The jacuzi was great as was the fabulously hot steam room...
There are two water jets at the end of the swimming pool which you turn on and off yourself - really strong!!
Only nit picking thing was there is no bag to put wet swimsuit in and we are used to the Swan at Newby bridge which provides them...also no water fountain.
Went into the reception area and settled on the comfy couches. The afternoon tea was scrumtious with plenty to eat...all the cakes were obviously freshly made and excellent quality.
We had a great day and would recommend.

As we arrived the smell of chlorine from the pool was obvious.... well the do have a pool!
Reception staff were welcoming and friendly, they stay included a cream tea on arrival that the reception staff prepared, this was ok, the cream was sweetened which is not to my taste I think it was out of a can, the scones were warn and soft and rather nice.
We were upgraded to a kingsized room which was nicely set out, good size room with seating area with table nice sized flat screen tv on a wall bracket that I am sure could have been swivelled so it could be watched from the 4 poster bed. The mattress had a bit of a wierd feel but we both slept well on it. Bathroom has a corner jacuzzi bath but no shower, the tiled floor didnt quite meet the bath and there was no towel rail and the hot and old taps did not have indicators on them to day which was which. It was clean and had plenty of hot water.
Now for the Restaurant well what can I say....
We had booked our meal for 7pm and arrived to be seated in the bar with a menu, slowly more guests turned up all to be also seated in the bar with menus, there was no bar tender so we couldn't even get a drink.
Eventually after about 20 minutes the bar tender arrived with his order book to take our dinner orders trying to work out who arrived first. Orders taken we were still left in the bar although by now we had drinks as the bar tender also took our drinks order. Another 20 minutes passed before we were shown to our table. Once seated we only has to wait about 5 minutes to get our starters.
The room included a set meal or £20 credit towards the a la carte menu so my husband chose the set menu and I from the a la carte. my husbands onion soup was nice but my duck breast and onion tarte was overcooked and almost burnt, should have known this didnt bode well but....
Maincourse hubbys roast lamb could have been out of a school canteen, and my panfried game was almost inedible as it has been so overcooked I struggled to cut the meat and it was so covered in rock solid juniper berries it made picking them out a chore, the vegetables were the only part that was acceptable. I would have sent it back but no staff were anywhere to be seen and when they cae to give food to other guests you could not catch their attention. No-one came and asked if our meals were ok and when they came to take away our plates they just grabbed them and ran. Eventually the receptionist from the front desk came to ask us what deserts we wanted so thinking lets go 'safe' we ordered creme brulle... which was the best part of the meal even though it was not set at the bottom.
Maybe it was that the had a lot of staff off sick or other circumstances beyond their control but no appologies were made for the poor service and quality of the meal. We had been planning to have a meal in the hotel restarant for the 2nd night when it was my birthday but was not prepared to go through the fiasco again to get an inedible meal.
The hotel also offered a Kendal mint cake on booking out this was not supplied it even offered and by this time we were not actually expecting it!

My friend and I booked afternoon tea through travel zoo which also allowed us to use the swimming pool, we decided to add on a massage each and make a day of it, as it turned out we had a lovely day, good swimming pool area, followed by avery relaxing hot stone massage followed by a sumptuous afternoon tea, we had to take some of the cake home! The staff in all the areas we visited were lovely really enjoyed our day, thanks
