Worth the climb up the hill for the sweeping views. Castle itself is quite small but worth walking around and seeing inside.

A bit of a climb up (well, it was after Sunday Lunch, anyway!) but the views over Kendal when you get to the Castle are well worth it. Castle ruins only, but interesting none-the-less. And fantastic views over the surrounding fells. Well worth a visit, if only to blow the cobwebs away.

Kendal Castle is situated in the middle of Kendal on an elongated hill. The summit can be reached by a number of footpaths, taking approx 15 minutes. From the top there are pleasant views in all directions. The castle remains are fascinating to explore. It is free to visit. There are plenty of information signs explaining the various parts of the castle. If you are in Kendal when the Mintfest street festival is on, then consider climbing the castle to watch the fireworks display up there, which usually happens on the last night of the festival.

lovely walk to the castle when its not wet. Great place to walk a dog or take children for a picnic. I went at night which was a little creepy, but there's bound to be something there with its history

Wonderful panaramic views demonstrate why the castle was built in this location. Sadly there is not much left of the buildings to admire, but the information boards help, with a little imagination, to capture the scene of life in those days long ago. As is often the case with the site free for all to explore there was undesirable litter deposited in many of the sheltered corners. A constant annoyance for both visitors and the local authorities.
My visit was at the end of February and not to be missed is the magnificent carpet display of crocus bulbs in the beautiful adjoining cemetery.
