This is a lovely place to visit as it is a real, family house with family portraits up to the oresent day all over the house, it is full of objects tha t the family have collected over the years and it feels lived in. Some of the items on show are really beautiful as the Stricklands were great collectors. It is lovely to know that a member of the family is still living there. The grounds are truly beautiful with so much to see. Certainly one of the nicest properties I have visited.

Very friendly, helpful attitude from all the staff we encountered - whether in the shop, the cafe, the reception desk or in the rooms. All the rooms in the house had useful printed information, and staff only too happy to supplement this. It was a shame that the weather was so poor so the we were unable to appreciate the gardens or see them at their best - but the potential was obvious.

This is a very impressive family home where some of the best attractions come at the highest level - particularly the unexpected medieval keep built into the 'modernisations' and left clear to the roof. This is a well told tale of significant landed aristocracy with the bonus of the limestone garden and lake. As NT members we had free admission. As builders with lime mortar it was a rare treat to see the sympathetic stonework reconstruction.

It is a good national trust cafe, with NT prices. Soup / sandwiches all excellent, usual display of very good cakes. Was very impressed to see adapted cutlery readily available for thise with eg Rheumatoid arthritis - well Done Sizergh on that.

I stopped off for lunch en-route to Scotland. Enjoyed the soup and a sandwich which were both freshly prepared that day, unlike some other reviewers problems I found the cafe and staff pleasant. It is worth noting that I visited on a Monday lunchtime, and that the house was now closed for the winter so it was i am sure quieter than it would be in the summer. I enjoyed the opportunity to "stretch my legs" around the gardens which remained open. All in all a far superior option to stopping on the motorway, and a much nicer meal and surroundings.
