Owner description: Winner of the Art Gallery of the Year Cumbria Life Culture Awards 2017, Abbot Hall Art Gallery is a Grade 1 listed building with a national reputation for showing contemporary and historical works. Conveniently located in the town centre, Abbot Hall enjoys a pretty riverside setting. Just a stone’s throw from leafy Abbot Hall Park and Kendal Parish Church, it makes for an inspiring day out for all. On permanent display in the period Georgian rooms is a selection of works by Cumbrian born artist George Romney (1734-1802), one of the greatest of all eighteenth-century portrait painters. The centre piece is what many perceive to be his masterpiece, the beautiful The Gower Family: The Children of Granville, 2nd Earl Gower (1776-7). Also on show is The Great Picture which is an impressive triptych commissioned by Lady Anne Clifford (1590-1678) in 1646. It depicts the story of her life-long struggle for, and ultimately succession to, the family inheritance.

The current exhibition at the Abbot Hall Gallery is well worth visiting. Patrick Caulfield has had a recent exhibition at the Tate and yet here is a new angle on his work in humble, but vibrant, Kendal.
The exhibition juxtaposes paintings etc from those who influenced him alongside his own development.
Some lovely and some quirkily stimulating works are there to be enjoyed. Plenty of rave reviews already opted in the Gallery"s visitor book - so do not just take my word.

This little place had great coffee and good fresh sandwhiches and lunch time specials - but over the summer they left and were replaced with dishwater, and prepacked sandwhiches which were dry and tasteless. On my visit no specials were available.

Abbott Hall is a lovely art gallery situated at the southern end of Kendal. Works include an excellent collection by George Romney, who spent his final days just a couple of hundred yards away. Regular, changing exhibitions present an eclectic mix of work by well known artists. There is an excellent tea room with a short, but tempting menu. Ample parking immediately adjacent.

It started to rain whilst wandering around Kendal so we ducked into the Abbot Hall .Lots of interesting paintings and a beautiful building to hang them in . Quite an eclectic mix of old and new and it kept us occupied for over an hour
