“Good Food Never Matched By Good Service”
Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

We live midway between Kendal and Windermere and appreciate the quality (products & service) of the Booths supermarkets. I have eaten in the Artisan cafe on the ground level of the Kendal Booths store maybe 20 times since it opened a number of years ago. I expect high quality ingredients and preparation and am very rarely disappointed in these respects at the Artisan cafe with a mixture of original menu options and classics, using fresh ingredients that are nicely prepared. The reason we don't use Artisan more frequently is that service levels are at best average and mostly disappointing and poor. There appears to be a culture of service mediocrity amongst many staff and therefore one can only assume the cafe leadership team. This is very surprising given the care taken to successfully run the supermarket upstairs, the quality of the cafe environment (good picture exhibition from Queen Katherine School at present) and the quality of the food itself. Today's visit was typical of our experience. My advice is to sit near the welcome counter where it is lighter, has better airflow and you are less likely to be ignored by the staff.

“Daughters lunch out”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

On a very wet Saturday my friend Bridgett and I decided to take our 3yr old daughters out for a spot of lunch, which can be a mission at the best of times. We booked a table as the lunch time queues can be long and after a spot of cloud dodging shopping with buggies in the lovely shops in Wainwrights Yard entered the food fragrant busy atmosphere of Artisan. The reception couldn't have been more welcoming after the rain & we settled down. There were high chairs for the girls, they are big enough to sit on chairs, but it does help if they can't escape the table, and colouring. The food coming out of the kitchen was beautifully presented, I don't mean a master piece on a plate kind of food, but just thoughtful, colourfully arranged delicious food, even plain old fish and chips looked grand in paper and a basket, its all down to the detail. We ordered for the girls sausage and chips, which wasn't on the menu but the kitchen were happy to accommodate them. I ordered the Blackpudding salad with waited new potatoes and a poached egg, Bridgett ordered the prawn and clam risotto. After not too long a wait as the place was buzzing our food arrived. The girls came with a side order of gravy and I nicked a bit of sausage as is my prerogative as a parent and it was delicious. Mine arrived and not only did it look wonderful it tasted Devine, Bridgetts risotto was plentiful as some risottos are not, but apparently delicious. We abstained from pudding, but those coming out of the kitchen looked yum. We couldn't fault the service and noticed they do afternoon tea for a very agreeable amount, plus a bottle of champers obviouslt extra, so us big girlies may escape on the bus and do that one afternoon.

“Disappointing, poor service and stale cakes....”
Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

Spent some time in Kendal on the way back from Windermere and after a few hours around the shops decided to stop for a coffee and cake. Spotted this cafe as it looked busy and inviting but wish we'd gone to the one next to it in the smaller shop.

After being seated and deciding on the cakes and drinks we wanted (nice large menu) we were given the cakes straight away but had to wait for the drinks. We only ordered a tea and fresh orange but had eaten both cakes before they arrived. Surely you'd bring both? The cakes were very disappointing, as they were stale and tasted at least a few days old. I should have really sent them back but I'm not one to make a fuss. We had the Coffee & Hazelnut cake and Apple & Spice. Shouldn't have bothered. Needless to say we didn't leave a tip! A few changes and the experience could have been a lot better!

“Yummy breakfast!”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

We visit Artisan fairly regularly often for breakfast, which because it is served until 11.30am is good for brunch too! Kippers with poached egg, fried potatoes on excellent sourdough toast for me today with a side of portobello mushrooms....and for him a huge portion of scrambled eggs on toast with ......a side of portobello mushrooms! Pot of tea for him and an Americano for me. All served promptly and with a smile. Good value at just over £14 especially as we were far too full to eat again until 7pm!

“Amazing customer service - portions can be on the large side”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

Visited here for lunch a couple of weeks ago. My lunch was lovely and just the right size. My father, however, ordered the fish board and we were both taken a little by surprise by the sheer size of it! From the looks of other things coming out the kitchen, large portions seemed to be a common theme.

Thankfully we had an incredibly helpful waitress who really did go the extra mile, offering to box up what he couldn’t manage so he could take it away and finish it off later. Unfortunately we weren’t planning on being near a fridge for the rest of the day, so had to decline the offer, but we were very grateful for the offer. My father also asked her what one of the condiments that came with the platter was, and not only did our waitress immediately know (dill jelly, it turned out), she informed us that they sold it in their shop and went and got a jar right away. You really couldn’t fault the service!
