“Idiotic service and horrible breakfast”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

The staff here were so idiotic and the organisation so poor that there were apparently not enough rooms available for our party (even though they had most definitely been booked and later confirmed). 2 of our party were then left without a room to stay in and had to go to the nearest Days Inn (the only hotrl availsble at such short notice during Mintfest) which was a long drive away and obviously a horrible motorway chain hotel. The next day a room for them was magically "found" and the keys were unceremoniously given over to a member of our party with little explanation and no apology! It turned out that they had made a mistake and had needlessly turned our 2 colleagues away. Apart from the appallingness and the expense of the error itself, there was little or nothing done to make amends. Our company is pursuing them for the cost of the error. On top if this, my room smelled of feet, the breakfast clearly consisted of reheated powdered egg mix and the staff were uniformerly unprofessional, unhelpful and stupid. Not a good idea to stay here.

Hi

Having discussed these problems with my general manager, he did explain about the booking and it was the hotels fault with the duty manager making the mistake and apologies accepted by yourself and all things were rectified. Nothing was mentioned about any problems with the breakfast and when checking out the GM did ask if everything was OK and a reply of yes was returned.

The GM did apologise on departure and he was told everything turn ut to be ok.

My apologies for any inconvenience and any problems during yur stay.

Nice hotel, good breakfast. Entertainment acceptable, nothing great.
Room was in need of a clean, especially bathroom area.
Staff friendly, but as a coach trip for 1 night, check in was too lengthy, and 4pm too late.
Overall, would I stay again? Yes, but only for an overnight.

For a start the picture on this site is totally wrong, its a yellow painted building. The first room we were given, a double, had wallpaper hanging from the wall revealing black mould behind, so not something that had just happened, the bathroom was dirty, especially the door it had brown run mark stains all down it. A blanket on the bed had a large hole in it and all furniture was dusty. We asked to be moved and were put in a family room, the walls looked like they had been painted within the last couple of months however the wardrobe, dado rail, light fittings basically all furniture was dusty, the toilet roll holder fell off the wall, a screw fell out of the towel rail and the shower screen had black mould along the bottom. Now i understand it is an old building however general cleanliness was not present at all. Breakfast was served on a Child's plate and as for calling it a traditional English breakfast this is a joke. It comprised of 1 x rasher of bacon, 1 x sausage 1/2 a tomato, 1 x fried egg and a small spoonful of beans. My wife opted for scrambled egg instead of fried and it was just a watery mess. There was no black pudding or mushrooms or even the option for fried bread which to me is part of an English breakfast. As for the £80 I paid for 1 night we expected a lot more, We have stayed in cheaper hotels and got far far better accommodation and breakfast than the County Hotel. In closing I would NEVER recommend this place to Anyone, I can not give any sort of rating as to me it is below standard of the most basic accommodation you could think of.

Room Tip: Don't have any room is this hotel.

I was naturally concerned to read of the unfortunate incedents which lead to your dissatisfaction and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused during your stay.

I will be visiting the hotel shortly and will look at rectifying these matters with my General Manager.

My apologies once again

A nice place for a drive break in Kendal for a stop from the M6. Well presented rooms and all you need for a night or two. Breakfast was good and the hotel is well positioned for a wander around the town. You can park about 1 minute away.

A rather tired and run-down hotel, but the staff are very helpful and friendly, rooms warm and clean, and the front door is just across the road from the Kendal railway station and a corner store. Some recent improvements are apparent - heating and double glazing, for instance - but these seem rather lost amongst layers of older and now outdated work. Any redeeming heritage features have long gone.

However, for me, The County offers clean and comfortable accommodation, two good nights sleep and filling breakfasts. A short stroll passes several pubs and cafés, museum, laundimat, rental car agencies, weekend village cricket matches, Kendal Castle views and pleasant river walks. In a limited list, The County Hotel might fall into the 'bad' category, but in reality this hotel is more pleasant than the star rating would suggest. Sort of Fawlty Towers without Basil!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the road are noisier, especially in summer evenings when an open window is needed...

The County Hotel was a nice experience for me. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dining was very good, food was varied and you never left the table hungry. Although the rooms were a little oldfashioned they were clean and the bed was comfortable, a plus in any hotel. They had entertainment in the lounge on some evenings, which was enjoyed by all. One evening we had great excitement when water came pouring through the ceiling on to the gentleman playing the piano,(he kept on playing). Someone had left their water running and the bath had overflowed...Well situated for siteseeing by public transport or self hire. A great place to base yourself to discover the wonders of the beautiful Lake District

Well located for public transport or self drive. Good British food. Great base for local visits and day trips to south lakes and further north. Much improved by new management. Entertainment some evenings with great northern humour and a wide range of music. Treat yourself to the suite if you can
