“Great service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2014

We actually stayed in this Inn, and would have liked to review it as somewhere to stay, rather than its food. Rooms were a little dated, but the large, comfy and quiet, and the owner and his nephew (?) worked hard for us. Great service, able to sit out in the evenings with a patio heater, awesome breakfasts, which my little girl loved. Extra touches included hot water bottles, local advice about where to go, genuine interest in the people they were looking after. And easy to find, at the edge of Kendal. Thoroughly recommended and planning to go back.

“A bit tired.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2014 via mobile

We went for the Sunday lunch and the food was very tasty and hot, with enough for the two of us. The place itself is a bit tired and could do with some TLC's to bring it up to shape again. The service was OK, but staff seemed on to much of a rush to give a warm welcome. For the food alone, well worth a visit

“Terrible service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2014

Called with family for Sunday lunch. Roast beef (£10) was very tender but I suspect pre packed sliced beef? Yorkshires & roast potatoes seemed to be of the frozen type, small dish of veg to share between two. Third dish of half roast chicken & chips (£10) served in a tatty fake wooden basket. Side order of sauce was forgotten and had to be prompted. No cutlery served to use and I had to go looking for some. Service seemed very poor, staff preferring to conduct personal conversation whilst customers waiting to be served. Building is beautiful and lovely location, but needs a complete renovation as is dated and scruffy. Would not recommend.

“Lovely food, pleanty of choice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2014

best food i've had in a long time (even my own) as being vegetarian i normally have a problem with only finding 1 thing on the menu, but not at the gateway there is plenty of choice and found it hard to choose which meal to pick from. we went for my auntys birthday with 10 other members of our family and everyone of us enjoyed our meals, the staff were friendly and efficient and the owner was very nice and took time out of his busy sunday to come and speak to us which gave that extra point for us. Lovely afternoon we will definatly be eating again next time we visit kendal.

“Needs brought back to life”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014

Stayed here on way home to Edinburgh from Somersert.

A beautiful house in a lovely setting. The decor was very tired and dirty in both the restaurant and bedroom area. The entire house needs gutted and brought back to life again to be a bit more modern and clean. May take a hit in short term closing to redecorate but would gain long term when all done up.

I also have no objections to dogs being allowed but do object to them being allowed in dining area and up on the seats, people have to eat there.

4 people also turned up asking for food just before 8, to be told sorry kitchen closes at 8! Seriously, huge British but bear of mine, serious lack of customer services. It was before 8 so should have been allowed to order. But its the businesses loss!!

On the other hand the staff were all extremely helpful and the food delicious. Paid about £100 for DBB for a family of 3, not sure or was worth that when I got a Holiday Inn, with a pool on the way to Somerset for £65,DBB for 3 of us.

Would probably not stay again.
