“great coffee”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

Wonderfully quaint old building , and a pleasant greeting from the lady owner/manager on the morning we popped in late morning desperate for coffee and something for breakfast ( staying in pods at YHA see separate review). We were served wonderful cheese and ham toasties with lots of thick slices of proper ham on our choice of bread , hit the spot nicely. The coffee was great and made all the better with the offer of hot milk with it just what we needed after the mini pub crawl of the four Hawkshead pubs the night before :). we were the only people in the place on a drizzly September Saturday morning so we did't encounter any service problems, the lady who served us was pleasant throughout. As others have suggested the addition of garnish or relish would enhance the overall offer and feeling of value for money (at about £5 for a toastie) but we were generally a pair of very happy hungover campers

“Could do better.”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Popped in for lunch, found that the menu was limited to basic sandwich fillings (cheese ham tuna egg). All priced around 4 pounds, but didn't come with garnish of any kind, except a solitary cherry tomato. The sandwich was tasty, just not enough for the price. Hot drinks were good. Service needs to improve. This has the makings of a really nice cafe, just needs a bit of umpf.

“lovely cake”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

I came across this place by chance when in Hawkshead on holiday recently. Fortunately there was a table free outside, which was ideal for people watching. The chocolate cake was extremely good as was the tea (leaf tea), and the service was friendly and efficientl. I would definitely go back.

“nice cakes, good portion and price, but service could be better”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Delicious cakes with a good homemade taste, and the sticky toffee pudding portion is massive.- Nice scones - Even one scone with cream and jam is served on a 3 tier stand. Large range of teas. Prices are reasonable - just under £3 for a cuppa. My only problem is the service could have been smiley.

“Their loss was our gain!”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

Had high expectations as we had visited this tearoom a couple of years ago & had enjoyed a superb cream tea. I remember though we had to wait until a table became free then.
This time around the owner/manager lady told us rather abruptly, on entering, that there would be a 30 minute wait. As we looked around we noticed that all the tables (and there aren't very many) all had reserved signs on them. I then asked if we could reserve a table for 30 mins time to which she said actually it would be 45 mins!! Make up your mind. ..which it is 30 or 45 I thought. Do you want business or not? Clearly not. So we went elsewhere - to a lovely tearoom (Grandy Nooks) where we got a warm welcome and delicious cakes & tea. We won't bother again with Minstrels - Grandy Nooks knocks spots off it.
