Owner description: Hill Top was Beatrix Potter's most beloved place, packed full of her favourite things and left just as she wanted it for visitors to enjoy. You will see why she loved it so much and used it and the surrounding countryside as inspiration for many of her famous children's tales. Your visit helps the National Trust continue her work to look after the Lake District.

A very pretty cottage, make sure you go early if you decide to visit as it gets so busy, its lovely to visit if you have children as the staff will lend them a book of Samuel Whiskers, all the illustrations are of the cottage and the challenge is for them to recognise items in the pictures , my little girl really liked it.The nice thing about the souvenir shop is that it has lots of lovely Beatrix Potter gifty things whereas all other National Trust shops sell all the same things near enough.
I wouldn't be in a rush to go back but its one of those places that I am glad I have seen, and taken the children to see, a bucket list place if you like :)

Good balance of information and knowledgeable staff. Worth parking at the Lake nearby and walking up along Beatrix Potter's trail

It took us quite some time to find Hill Top House as it is not well signposted from the road. We ended up asking directions from the tourist information centre and eventually arrived later in the afternoon. The House is free for National Trust members but if you're not, it will cost you 9 pounds. The house is not large and, although filled with a great many interesting objects, takes a relatively short time to go through. Likewise the garden, although charming, is small. Unless you are an avid Beatrix Potter fan you may find Hill Top House very poor value for money.

We arrived around 11am and thought we would have plenty of time to visit the house before our booked trip on the Steam Gondola on Lake Coniston, but unfortunately there was at least an hour & a half wait, so we had to make do with the gardens. The house & gardens were very picturesque and full of flowers, the vegetable garden was a must visit, loved the old spade handle amongst the plants!
