Owner description: Hill Top was Beatrix Potter's most beloved place, packed full of her favourite things and left just as she wanted it for visitors to enjoy. You will see why she loved it so much and used it and the surrounding countryside as inspiration for many of her famous children's tales. Your visit helps the National Trust continue her work to look after the Lake District.

“Not just for fans of Beatrix Potter”
Reviewed May 2, 2014

A delightful little house. We aren't big Beatrix Potter fans but this house really brought her to life, especially the way the NT brought out the links to her books and drawings. A sweet little garden and (I assume) descendants of the original flock of sheep.

Japanese speaking guide on site.

“Very dark house!”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

Being a national trust member and being in the Lakes, a visit to Hill top was a must. Its a small house, so timed entry is used, which is fine as this limits the amount of people in the space at any one time. The house is kept very dark presumably to help preserve much of its contents, which did all belong to Beatrix Potter and were largely in situ whilst she lived there. Although interesting to see, there wasn't very much to read and learn about the lady herself. The volunteers (and there were a lot of them!) were friendly and helpful which is a real bonus if you do have questions. I would say that if you are not a National Trust member then this is wildly overpriced and would offer little value for money especially if you were a family of four! The garden is small and has plenty of (Peter) rabbits (I don't think you need to pay for entry to the garden). If you are a fan of BP or a NT member then do go and visit, otherwise you can probably give it a miss.

“Bunnies”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

This was an interesting trip, the only complaint that I had was that people were not ushered through the small rooms fast enough. It did make it difficult to observe what was offered to see.
I found the garden to be of great interest, there was a bunny hopping about in the garden. My first thought was Peter was visiting.

“A glimpse into the real world of this amazing lady.”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

Kept as it was during her time there with much of her personal items still in situ, you get to see some of the letters she wrote, all beautifully illustrated, and her collections of books and slides from her interest in botany. Her three long case clocks still keep good time, and the staff of volunteers are very knowledgeable and will answer all of your questions and add to your experience.
