“Perfect!”

New owners have created an ambience in their pub for others to aspire to. Great pub food menu, perfect after a day in the hills, smashing breakfasts, well kept real ale, sensible prices, comfortable bed, powerful showers, clean rooms - what more could you ask for?? We will be back.......... :)

Just returned from five night stay. Booked mainly because of location in lovely traditional Lakeland village. On arrival we were greeted by friendly helpful staff. The accommodation was clean, warm and comfortable and the food was well prepared and served promptly, taking our preferences into consideration. The accommodation has retained the feel of a 15th Century Inn whilst adding some modern touches for comfort such as modern bathroom fittings in the ensuite. Yes the floorboards were squeeky and sloping in places but this all added to the fun. We had a great time, mainly due to the attentions of the staff and a real family atmosphere. We arrived as strangers but left as friends and would definitely return.

I have just stayed at the Red Lion for a 2 day break over the New Year and would recommend it. The management has now changed and things are well run. The staff are Romanian but their English is excellent and they are so polite. The food was also very good both on New Years Eve and also for breakfast. They also put a fantastic buffet on for residents on New Years Day. Entertainment on New Years Eve was also top class.
Bedrooms are very quaint and clean. Good beers and exellent wines at reasonable prices.

This hotel is everything that the Hawkshead / Lake district experience should be about. The hotel has had a change of management, and what delightful people they turned out to be.

The room was perfect, overlooking one of Hawksheads squares ! The dining room was nice and not to crowded.

The bar with its open fire was friendly and welcoming, in fact it made you not want to venture out !

The staff ( most) are foreign studying here , they all spoke good English and where helpful friendly and polite.

The food ( mostly local produce) was excellent as was the local beer !!!

Car parking is provided.

Overall top notch and good value for money.

If you look closely it may be possible to see scratch marks coming down from the four poster bedroom door way down the stairs and out the front door ........... they where left by my wife when we had to drag her out the day we left! ;-)

Hawkshead is a very pleasant, oldy worldy place. The hotel was spoilt by the loud banging music from the kitchen which lasted until about 10 p.m. Am surprised that the cottages in the courtyard at the back don't complain (or perhaps they have but to no avail). It was like being in a foreign country as all the staff spoke broken English. The bedroom was small but adequate and the food was reasonable. Will not be returning.

This is an old pub in the centre of one of the most beautiful and best preserved villages in England. The rooms are simple and small but everything that matters - cleanliness, warmth, hot water, good shower and w.c., clean towels etc is of high standard. The staff are friendly and varied with interesting backgrounds. Our room was over the bar but we were not troubled by much bar noise which ended reasonably early. This may not be true at the height of the season of course. The dining room is nice with snow-white tablecloths and the breakfast is good . One can walk out of the door and be in superb countryside within a few minutes.

The negative reviews seem to be complaining that this pub is not a plastic chromium-plated establishment with lounges where you can watch television all day. Well it isn't - thank goodness.
