“Only in for food”
Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

We entered the red lion as they allowed dogs.

We had the starter of fish cake £4.95 for one fish cake, soup 3.95, lamb tagine 10.95 and fish and chips 1.95

The Fish cake was literally that one fish cake on a salad bedding slightly excessive for the price 2 would have been nice at that price

The vegetable soup was horrid really needed lots of seasoning

The lamb tagine wasn't served in a traditional dish and was just in a small pot. The dish was far to rich in tomatoes and left an aftertaste.

The Fish and chips had copious amounts of bones something you really don't expect. The Fish was dry and the chips were more like jacket potatoes really disappointed.

With 2 beers the bill was 37 quid, as reception in the area was poor I asked for the wifi only to be told it's for residents only? And that it wasn't actually wife which was nonsense as the wife was clearly in the building and after spending 47 quid I'd expect they get with the times and let paying customers use it too.

Massively disappointed

We stayed with our two young teenage girls for 2 nights.Everywhere was nice and clean and very welcoming. We had our tea here on our first night which was delicious and the portions sizes where huge so if you have a good appetite this is definitely the place for you! The breakfast was equally as tasty. Our girls went up to the room while my husband and I had a drink in the bar and they said it was cold. This was soon remedied by the edition of an extra portable radiator (nothing was too much trouble). We would definitely stay here again. The place could do with a bit of modernising (especially the floors in our room which were very uneven and squeaky and the toilet didn't flush very well at all!) but on the whole we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay here.

We stayed for one night at the Red Lion on a recent visit to the Lake District and really enjoyed it. Yes, some areas of the Pub are a bit tired but everywhere was really clean so what's the problem? The floor in our room sloped but you are staying in a 16th Century Coaching Inn so what do you expect? As far as we were concerned it all added to the character of the place.
We ate in the bar in the evening and the food was good and reasonably priced while the real ale was very good, also had a good laugh with Matt the barman and the rest of the people in the Pub.
We met the owners Paul and Lynn at breakfast and found them to be very friendly and approachable. The breakfast was probably the best we had all week!
We had a drink in all four of Hawkshead's Pubs but the Red Lion in our opinion was the most welcoming.

We stayed on the campsite in Hawkshead so I can't comment on the accommodation, but we tried all the pubs for dinner and found this the best one. Inside the decor is very unpretentious and tradtional - as in even old fashioned - but that's fine, who wants mock beams and cutesie curtains? We were there in the July heatwave, so apart from one meal when the garden was overflowing, we ate outside. Food is well cooked and well priced. True, they all charge more or less similar prices, but we certainly felt that the Red Lion was better on quality and value. Staff were always friendly and I did notice quite a lot of canine companions, though we didn't have one ourselves!

I am loathe to give a bad report, but I have to say something about this pub. As a pub its quite good, meals, friendly staff etc. Unfortunately, we stayed here for 2 nights & quite simply, its not up to scratch. Amongst other things, our rooms were not clean, nails were protruding through dirty carpet & there was at least a 6 inch slope across the room. I know its an old building, but really our room was not fit to be let. And it was the most expensive room we occupied during our 5 week trip around the UK.

Had a bar meal here whilst staying nearby. Food was ok and big portions, though £8.45 for double egg and chips seems a bit hefty! I think their till was not set up for what I ordered, but I was a bit taken aback at the cost. The other meal prices seemed pretty average for the area.
Friendly staff and the drinks prices were ok for the Lakes. They let dogs in and were nice to them. Atmosphere was nice.

A quirky and inviting little Inn in the village of Hawkshead in the Lake District. We are a family of 4, with a 15 year old and a 10 year old who were looking for a couple of days to escape the city and do some walking Unfortunately we had to look for somewhere dog friendly as we were unable to get anyone to look after our "pain in the butt" Jack Russel. So after trawling the internet I came across The Red Lion Inn. I rang them, they had a family room and they liked mutts.
So off we went, and I'm so glad we did. Warm friendly welcoming and comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble and the bar staff were really lovely. The room was a good size with bunk beds in an alcove so we all had privacy which is rare in a family room. The linen was clean and there were fresh towels every day. Lots of tea, coffee and hot chocolate in the room as well and plenty of soap and shower gel. The cooked breakfast included in the price of the room (£100.00 per night per room) was very well cooked and used local produce. We didn't have an evening meal there as we had arranged to go somewhere else. There are also some great pubs within spitting distance that served some fine real ales. Overall very good value for money. I notice people here moaning about the carpets etc. So what if the carpets are not brand spanking new and the place has some obvious signs of wear and tear. The atmosphere and friendly staff far outweigh any interior décor issues. Think shabby chic! Also its a very very old building so come on folks!!!!
The owner even gave my noisy little dog sausages in the morning so he will definitely be going back. I might even ask if we can go with him!
