“Great food, attentive friendly staff.”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

We ate here the night after our total catastrophe at the Red Lion (see other review) in an attempt to erase the memories as quickly as possible.

We hadn't booked and it was really busy but we managed to find a table in the bar which was perfect. There was a really good atmosphere in the pub and it was obviously one where the locals like to drink and put up with the large amount of tourists clad in their Rab/North Face/Berghaus etc like they've climbed up the foothills of Everest on the way to the front door.

Anyway, as we'd left all our gear back in the camper (lol), we sat back with a few drinks and waited for the food. When it came, it was fantastic - even the chips were done to perfection (and with care). The staff all seem to take pride in their service and quality of their food. My daughter had an ice-cream in a plastic penguin type thing which broke. One of the girls went out-of-her-way to try and find another one for her. She couldn't, but it was the thought that counted. Little things like that do make a difference.

The annual fireworks show was on and we were back and forth trying to watch. This was our last night in Hawkshead and we wanted to end on a high with nice memories of the place, rather than the disaster we'd had the night before. We were so glad we chose The Queens Head and next time we're in the area, we'll definitely return.

I hope other establishments in the village take note.

Room Tip: This is THE pub in Hawkshead.

Didn't stay here but did eat in the restaurant area one evening. Decor-wise this is the best of the Hawkshead pubs and although the food prices are significantly higher than the competition, its worth it. The family all had really good food (venison stew was one of the specials on the night we visited) and the beer was also excellent. My one criticism was that the staff, although polite were not as welcoming as other pubs had been. Maybe they'd had a long day?

Went there for my 50th with my husband. Stayed 2 nights. Felt I had to write this due to some negative responses about rooms. We stayed in an as-yet unfurbished room above the bar. Yes, could hear muffled noises beneath but slept through it- not a problem! All the food (including breakfast) beautifully cooked.
The upside of staying in our unfurbished room(room 3) was the view over Hawkshead village square.
The staff are good & Alfie exceptional, as well as being friendly, funny.

Go there- you'll enjoy it!

Me and my husband stayed in this truly relaxing pub in the middle of Hawkshead for three nights, and we loved every minute of it. the food is fantastic, especially the deserts! On our first night we meet Alfie and Natasha who were absolutely fantastic hosts. They made us feel very welcome, and engaged us with conversation at all the right times! Both an asset to The queens head. We shall be visiting this place for many years to come. Thank you.

This was our third stop on a short autumn tour. We'd been in here to eat on a couple of previous occasions in the past twelve months and it doesn't disappoint.

We were put into room 102 in the annex cottage next door and the room is a delight ; a bit snug but who cares ? It's recently been given a fantastic makeover by someone who clearly has an eye for style and colour. The bathroom is fantastic with a superb walk in power shower.

Food is wonderful and served in the warm, wood panelled restaurant by very pleasant and helpful staff. We had two very enjoyable dinners including my first bash at a pheasant.

The bar area has that old world ambience of rich dark woods and (I think) stone floor with plenty of seating and a few solitary drinkers standing at the bar.

The only (very slightly) negative was that I had spoken to the young receptionist on our second day to ask whether the room might be available for a third night. She confirmed that it would be available but that she'd have to check with the manager to see what rate we might be given. No one came back to us so we left after just the two nights wondering whether the message had ever got through.

Not to worry, we'd had a very enjoyable stay at the Queens Head and, in not staying for a third night, we instead went off to Monsal Dale , found a great hotel and had the unexpected opportunity to go cycling along the Monsal Trail; so nothing lost.

Room Tip: Pick Room 102

We booked late and as such had to move rooms, this showed the best and the worst of the hotel. The first night we had a wonderful newley finished room in a small annex with lovely decor and bathroom. Our remaining two nights we were in the main building in a dire room (#6) with awful bathroom. The staff are very helpful and the pub is busy, it's good to have the seperate dining area for guests and food was good. Breakfast isn't available till 8.30 which is far too late if you're planning a longer walk and thus need a prompt start, we had to miss breakfast in order to climb Sacfell Pike for example.
