“Great food and wines in an informal atmosphere of an old inn.”
Reviewed March 1, 2012

We enjoyed a week's stay and always enjoyed a hearty breakfast before the start of our daily excursions into the Lake District, as well as most evening meals at the end of the day. Traditional and continental food served with daily specials and a good choice of wines. Great informal atmosphere.

“Lovely welcoming pub with good food”
Reviewed January 24, 2012

The open fire was appreciated given the atrocious weather, as was the friendly welcome to us and our dog. Very good value food, friendly staff, good wine by the glass. At the end of the week Mr Buddysmum voted this the best meal he'd enjoyed during the whole week. Would definitely recommend!

“A Friendly Pub with Excellent Beer”
Reviewed October 9, 2011

This is a friendly pub with excellent beer (Hawkshead Brewery plus guests) and good food at very reasonable prices. Portions are large and well suited to hungry hill-walkers like us but don't expect fine dining. (For that, try the excellent Drunken Duck a couple of miles away.) There is a formal restaurant where we have eaten on previous visits but the atmosphere is much better in the bar and the food identical.

I can recommend the Trio of Sausages (Wild Boar with Apple, Venison and Chilli, Pork and Stilton) - indeed, all 3 of our party had this and 2 of us repeated the experience the next night - served with red wine gravy and a choice of mash (flavoured with grain mustard or cheese and bacon) but the accompanying dish of roast root vegetables was over-cooked. Desserts were OK although the sticky toffee pudding was too restrained and lacked the strong flavours and stickiness of the best versions while the cheesecake looked to be straight out of a chiller cabinet.
