“just the thing to experience a working farm atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2010

My wife and I, together with another couple, visited this lovely B&B to get away from city life and experience life on a working farm. Wilf the farmer and his wife Marian did everything to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Breakfast was a full English one with eggs, bacon, baked beans, sausages, mushrooms and tomatoes. The farm itself gives a feeling of being in an ancient building, and, although the rooms are fully functional, they are rather basic, and creaky. However, to us city dwellers, this was just the thing which made our stay here so exciting. If we wanted luxury, we wouldn't have chosen to stay on a farm. Marian is a pleasant lady who prepared tea for us upon our arrival....being a glorious day, she took the tray to the little garden opposite the farmhouse. I really appreciated that Wilf, her husband, and a very busy farmer, took the time to sit with us and talk to us about his work, and pleasantly asking about our little island of Malta. One more thing I really liked about Wilf was that he allowed us to join him in his early morning round to the top hills to feed the cattle....an experience we shall never forget. I think we must have got into his way a little, but he never showed it, and seemed to actually enjoy explaining about the farm, the cows and the sheep. One thing I must warn potential visitors to High Loanthwaite is....make sure you have a car. It is situated some 5 minutes by car from Hawkhead, but at night, the place is dead dark, and walking back to the farm would not be a pleasant experience. As for ourselves, we loved this place, and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to stay in a beautiful corner of the Lake District. If I ever visit the Lakes again, I would almost definitely stay at High Loanthwaite again. Mark Galea. Malta.

We stayed here because Low Loanthwaite (almost next door) no longer accepts bookings, and the historical reviews here on Tripadvisor were good.

Our host, Marion, was lovely and had an outstanding eye for attention to detail and made us feel very welcome. She lit the real fire in the living room on both nights we stayed and was excellent at not being intrusive. We had the whole living room to ourselves on both nights we stayed.

She was also great at remembering what we were drinking and left a pint glass for me and a wine glass for the missus on our second night, going on what I'd asked for the night before - a lovely touch of service.

Every room has Freeview Digital TV. Our room had a shower, but I believe one of the other rooms has an en-suite bath. The B&B did have additional guests staying on the second night, but the walls are thick between the rooms so we never heard them (and hopefully they never heard us or our baby!).

The full English breakfast (fixed time of 8.30am) was enjoyable and adequate.

We were also provided with a pack 'n' play travel cot in our room, which was really appreciated and saved us bringing our own. The bedroom is a good size.

This is a real, working farm. You will probably park your car next to sheep, cows and horses. There is a smell associated with all these animals, but that's part of the lure of the countryside. It's deathly quiet at night, which is great if you need your sleep. If you need to be contactable, bear in mind that I didn't get any wireless Internet here and I barely got a mobile signal on O2.

If you are a fan of 'Coronation Street' you can see the house that Joe McIntyre took Gail away to for their honeymoon just up the road. The lake where he subsequently 'died' can be seen too! It's 5 minutes away at Pull Wyke Bay.

Ambleside is close but the pretty village of Coniston is even closer. This is the nearest place for shops. The Spar in the garage was good for basic supplies. We can heartily recommend the Black Bull pub in Coniston as a dining location and for beer. It's where they brew the lovely 'Bluebird' beer. They even provide 2 litre takeaway bottles if you want to take it back home or to your room.

The Beatrix Potter attractions are also not far away. If you like scenic drives, make sure you don't miss the Kirkside Pass and a road called 'The Struggle'. This is an apt name for it, as it's a winding, steep gradient, mostly single track road from the top of Kirkside Pass to Ambleside. Not for the faint-hearted, but utterly beautiful.

We were very happy with this choice of B&B for staying in the gorgeous Lake District.
