We decided, at the last minute, to go to the Lake District for a walk and a nightstop. We assumed that turning up, on December 30th, would not be too much trouble. However, every man and his dog seemed to have the same idea of a last minute trip to this lovely part of the world and the traffic was horrendous. (The weather was beautiful - a crisp winter's day!).
Anyway, before I waffle too much, we ended up staying in the Traveller's Rest Inn in Grasmere. We have been here before, many times, to sample their lovely real ale and enjoy a fairly good, honest, meal.
It cost £60 for the room, with breakfast, for one evening. The room was OK. The bedding was very tired and the room was cramped. However, this place is donkeys years old, and therefore you have to expect that "rustic, cosey" feel.
The breakfast more than made up for the room.
We did eat here in the evening too and it was fine. T
The place itself, as a pub, has a lovely feel and is spacious and authentic.
The real ale is spot on! Jennings "Snecklifter" is one my favourites and is served well here. (As it always has been).
All in all, £60 for 1 night's B & B for two people, is good value. I would not stay here for more than 2 nights though.More
