We stayed in room 6, an ensuite twin and found the room clean, very comfortable and pretty. I thought it pricey at £45 pppn but guess that's the going rate in the Lakes. Generally staff were friendly and helpful. Menu was not cheap but the food was excellent and the three course deal for £13.95 was excellent value. We appreciated the flexibility of staff regarding making the time for breakfast and check-out slightly later than usual. The building was old and therefore very attractive.

Loved it - just my kind of place!
And yes, I'd read the negatives, and some bedrooms could indeed do with a refurbishment.
But roaring log fires, fantastic views, great beer, friendly staff who aren't fawning but just get on with it....it felt like home, down to the skew-whiff pics and maps on the walls.
Fab food too, and wonderful location. I'd go back any time...except, of course, when it's camping weather ;-)

the travellers rest is was a beacon of light as i staggered soaking off helm crag opposite they issued a largeish double room that was both warm and had a hot shower with a little bottle of free shampoo and a cake of soap to cleanse me. refreshed i alighted to the dining room where excellent jennings snek lifter waited in abundance and the special board actually had special things on it scallops pidgeon and a loverly tangy citrus chicken breast the staff all came across as articulate and despite being from places afar all spoke english very well. the beds comfy and breakfast was even better. altogether a place well worth staying in. I personally cant see what the bad reviews are on about as i had the best stay and was treated like the princess i long to be

Booked to stay here for one night with my wife just after christmas. Why oh why didn,t i read the reviews first? The place looks rather nice on their website i have to say but reality is somewhat different.

As soon as we walked into the bar area on arrival the alarm bells rang. The duty manager of the day had little in the way of people skills. He was actually serving behind the bar and asked us to bear with him. He forgot about us and then couldn,t find the key to our room. He decided to put us in another room.

Walking up to the room revealed pokey stairways, threadbear carpets, tatty walls and tired ornaments. The room was a joke. Small, dirty and in a terrible condition. Another reviewer has talked about pubic hairs in bathrooms, we had the same experience.

We need to keep in mind here that i was expected to pay £55 each for this experience. I wondered if i,d misunderstood and it was actually £55 for the room with breakfast. Alas not!

We went back down to the bar where i had some excellent Jennings bitter and my wife and i ate a reasonable lunch to be fair. Unfortunately i had to listen to the duty manager moaning about how busy he was along with several innappropriate comments made about his state of mind. This really is a badly run establishment.

I decided to challenge the duty manager about the price and politely suggested that the quality of accommodation on offer was not in line with the tarriff. The fact that the hotel is undergoing refurbishment in January did little to help. I then asked for a discount.

The duty manager said that he could not authorise this but would speak to the boss. In short the response from the boss was that was the price and we could check out if we wanted. We decided to go along with this suggestion and announced our intention to leave. I made sure that we would not be receiving a bill and left. Fortunately we found accommodation elsewhere.

A week later and on checking my bank account they have debited my account with £110.00.

You have been warned. Dont do it!!!

Can't see what all the other bad reviews are on about...... ok the place is a bit old and worn out so what, it is an old place 400 yrs or thereabouts....... the staff are great.... the food is excellent...the beer is well kept [jennings] what more do you want...... evening meal is £12-95 for two courses or £13-95 for three courses..
and is top notch fodder........the breakfasts are very substantial and will keep you going all day!!!!!!! just go there and find out
all the best.......
