“Excellent Youth Hostel”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

My partner and I stayed at the Grasmere YHA in October for 2 nights. The staff behind the reception could not help us enough giving us excellent advice on walks to go on and restaurants to visit. They even gave us free maps to borrow. The room was small and basic but clean and the toilets and showers were kept clean. We made use of the self-catering kitchen which was well stocked with utensils and pots/pans etc with plenty of cookers for lots of people to use at once. It did get a bit small and crowded but no problem. Our only wish would be for some new toasters!

Grasmere itself was a lovely place to stay in the centre of the Lake District and the hostel is well situated close to the centre of the little village.

It was very good value for money compared to the B&Bs/hotels close by and the added benefit of being able to prepare our own food made this a good choice!

Just returned from 2 nights at YHA Grasmere.

We were greeted by nice staff who went through what the hostel has to offer etc. We stayed in a room for 2 which was average size. We were in the main building. There are plenty of toilets and showers in there and didn't have to queue once. The hostel was quiet on a night and didn't get disturbed with others. The bed was actually made up for us which is a first for me in a YHA !

The self catering kitchen and dining room is in a separate building, only 50 yards or so from the main one. There was 3 or 4 cookers so again didn't have to queue for those. The dining section has ample tables. Its all quite clean and modern, with plenty of cutlery etc.

Couple of bad points - the heating didn't work in the room, which isn't good if you are trying to dry clothes after a days walking. The car park is also very tight with room for about 8-10 cars. After that you have to park in the village.

Overall a pleasant stay in a nice hostel.

Thank you for your review and kind words. Glad to hear you enjoyed using the self catering kitchen and enjoyed having the beds made for you during your stay. We have an excellent drying room in the basement which is ideal for drying all types of clothing. We are looking into developing more parking spaces on site, at this time of the year, there's lots of parking close by to the hostel grounds. We look forward to welcoming you during your next stay. Thank you.

This is the second time I've stayed at this hostel, and I think the experience was even better. This time I was in the main building on the 1st floor in a room of 6. It was full most nights, but still reasonably quiet. It's far enough from the village that you arent' bothered by traffic or people. Great beds, large room and a hostel that offers breakfast and cooked meals? What more could you want! Great location too in a beautiful corner of the Lakes. Planning another trip there next year already!

Room Tip: Room 5 is rather loud overlooking the main door. First floor best despite stairs.

Thank you for your review and kind words. It's great when customers come back and stay with us and even better to hear that we've improved on your visitor experience. Not many people are aware that you can enjoy a fully cooked breakfast and evening meals at YHA stays. Thanks for mentioning it in your review, great to know that you're already planning your next visit with us. Thank you.

Stayed here on C2C walk as family of four. Had a very cramped family room for four - the smallest hostel room I have every come across. We had to walk in the rain to get to the main building and had to negotiate an entry system but we were only given on card for four of us. The evening meal was very good and perhaps the best of all youth hostels on this trip. We had to pay a £1 for washing tablets and £2 for each towel which seemed like profiteering. It was very expensive for a youth hostel but I guess Grasmere is full of tourists.

I was rather worried about staying at this hostel after some of the negative reviews on this site. Nevertheless since it was the only one with availability when we wished to travel I decided to go ahead and book. Unfortunately the website would not let me book a family room for six - instead offering 2 four roooms, which did not suit us very well. I went ahead and emailed the hostel direct and had a prompt reply. Hostels often don't have the advertised family rooms - instead they have eight rooms.

At each of the other hostels I booked we received an eight room but at the family price. It would seem that we were charged for an eight room rather than a family room at Grasmere which is annoying when you are on a budget. This is one of the negative issues with Grasmere, being more professionally run than other hostels means there is no flexibility.

However, the manager was very helpful when I rang to book and despite the above issue he did go out of his way to send through the menus and details of the hostel and booking.

The paperwork mentions limited parking - as we were travelling with a fully packed people carrier this concerned me but when we arrived at the hostel there were plenty of spaces. (Early arrival is probably best, park and explore Grasmere!)

Grasmere is a lovely hostel, although busy, and is situated on the Northern side of Grasmere village, close to Allan Bank (NT), a co-op with opening hours until 10pm and a childrens playground. Grasmere itself is a lovely little village if rather touristy during the day.

The manager was again friendly and took the time to talk to the children, he gave us all the information we needed and showed us personally to our room, ensuring we had all we needed before he left. The room was clean, with a sink, the beds made up and it was by far the best hostel room we stayed in out of three this summer.

The Hostel itself has a family games room - invaluable - with giant chess, connect 4 and jigsaws and other board games available. There is also a quiet lounge and a large dining room. It also has a very pretty garden with outdoor seating. All of these were very clean. Unfortunately the self catering kitchen is in an outbuilding, which is not very convenient and you need a key to get into it (provided on arrival). The bathrooms were a little surprising bearing in mind the rest of the decor which is beautiful. They were dated and not particularly clean. This is probably because the hostel was so busy however.

Another nice service at YHA Grasmere is that tea and coffee, and other beverages are available during opening hours. Although this is put on a tab, which can run high if you are not careful, it is very welcome after a long journey!

On arrival the manager highly recommended the hostel's own food and having enjoyed meals at two other hostels we decided to go for this option. Whilst they are very reasonably priced ( the same as the other hostels) we were not so impressed with the food. Where as both the other hostels had offered my fussy six year old a mini portion of an adult meal on the kids go free offer Grasmere refused to do so. This meant paying for another meal. The meals when they arrived whilst on a par with good pub grub were not as good as those at YHA Coniston although an improvment on YHA Patterdale. The cream on my fruit salad was decidedly odd smelling and although i returned it to the kitchen nothing more than an apology was offered. I must stress though that none of the food (apart from the cream) we have eaten at the YHA this year has been bad and the dining rooms are always clean and the staff friendly.

Food has to be collected from a counter, school dinner style rather than being brought to your table as at the other hostels and you are responsible for clearing up your own table afterwards. This is not a problem in itself but not the service we received at other cheaper hostels.

Again at breakfast time the dining area was very busy and there was a self service counter. You even had to make your own toast on a rather cantankerous rolling toaster.

Despite the one or two hiccups and the rather rigid approach to sales the Hostel was friendly, clean, and provided the best nights sleep out of any we stayed in. It was still a cheaper option to a bed and breakfast and enabled us to be right in the middle of Grasmere.

With this in mind I would highly recommend YHA Grasmere, don't be put off by the negative reviews! I hope we can visit again soon.

clean & spacious room. loads of seperate toilets, loads of showers. we booked in about the same time time as quite a few others. we never had to wait / que for either a loo or a shower. reception was a pleasant greeting experience, great coffee & pots of tea available. kitchen staff friendly and seem to enjoy their work as well. food was hot & plentiful. people cared enough to ask if there was anything you needed ( towels etc) without making it sound like a sales pitch. we were very impressed by this hostel which was only £5 more than the dreadful expeience that followed it in Patterdale. there couldnt have been more of a contrast. well done Grasmere!

just had a weekend in Grasmere and stayed at the yha. Room was comfortable and the bed was clean and comfey.
The breakfasts were excellent and the yha is in the perfect spot just a short walk down into the town.
For just £28 per nigh B&B it was a bargain.
Highly recommended
