“Not a gimic!”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

This place has been churning out gingerbread for years and years. In high season the queues may be long, and the shop might be small, but that is because this is a real place no a McAttraction. That is really it this is a real shop in a real Lake District village, there is nothing plastic or marketing driven. The gingerbread is unique, perhaps an acquired taste, but my advice is acquire that taste, and enjoy!
This is a must see location!

“Lovely gingerbread”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

its a shame you have to queue for so long to get inside the shop and once in there made to feel like you should know what you want straight away.no time to browse and no room to do so anyway, the shop is just a counter with a not so friendly person on the other side. However,i bought a packet of the gingerbread and it was delicious.

Don't know how many times I have been to this shop - its so delicious. Even better when sprinkled into vanilla ice cream. Just wish it was nearer home.

“Worth a Stop”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

Thus little shop is located right at the entrance to the cemetery where Wordsworth is buried. We arrived early so crowds were not an issue. I could see how one bus of tourists would quickly change my idyllic and picturesque impression of the bakery.
Warm out of the oven , the gingerbread was delicious. It is more like a bar cooky, very gingery and chewy in the center with a nice crunch on the outside.a A tin is available to bring the gingerbread home, but if transport time is more than a day, don't bother. I lugged several through customs and proudly presented the tins to my molasses loving family, Sadly, three day old Sarah Nelson's does not travel well. Dry and hard- no resemblance to the yummy sweet I had enjoyed three days before. M

Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread is best consumed when fresh, however we do recommend warming it up in an oven for a few minutes if it is to be consumed a few days after purchase. Alternatively, it is ok to freeze it, as soon as you can after purchase, in an airtight container. Again reheat in the oven for optimum enjoyment :)

Well done for lugging some tins through customs for others to enjoy!

My mum told us to go and try, it's delicious! Well worth a visit!! The staff were dressed in old Victorian style outfits. Lovely and traditional.
