“Great accommodation in the heart of Grasmere.”
Reviewed August 8, 2014

We have stayed in Grasmere many many times and this is the first time at Dale Lodge. Beautiful building stepped in history - The downstairs communal areas are furnished/decorated in keeping with the Georgian period. The staff were all very helpful, the room was on the small side but had a great view of the gardens. Very clean and again well furnished. Very quiet and peaceful part of the village. We were not encouraged to eat in the restaurant - to be honest we didn't see anyone in there of an evening. Tweedies bar which is attached serves great beers and wines, food is also great. It is a shame that the bar can only be accessed from the outside - not good when it's raining - although umbrellas are provided for use by the door...... Would highly recommend and hope to return.

The staff made our visit very enjoyable. Very friendly and helpful - they changed our room for one with a bigger double bed on request and made us very welcome. Nice grounds which we used during a mini heatwave and ate at the pub at the back of the hotel - good food and big portions. Wifi and packed lunches catered for us C2C walkers.

Room Tip: If you want a big bed and large bathroom, see if the restricted access room is available on the grou...

Stayed here on 28/7/14 - 30/7/14 in the Mews rooms (outside hotel). It was beautiful, the first thing that I liked about it was there is a hot tub you can use outside (shared), seating area and the room was modern, well presented, clean, cosy and it smelt so lovely.
Plenty of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits provided every day. We had bath robes, a hair dryer and many other things in the room to use. Great selection of breakfast in the morning inc a choice of cooked breakfast. Staff were very helpful and polite and showed us to our room.

Highly recommend staying in the Mews outside rooms, we had a information book which was great, it had a map of the town, what's around and to do and a spa booklet as they are linked with one of the spas so they give you discount if you go through the hotel, unfortunately they were fully booked, however the receptionist was amazing and as an alternative, booked me into the spa across the road (Wordsworth) I had a hot stone massage and it was amazing!!!

We stayed here for one night and really enjoyed it. The hotel is beautiful, set in a really pretty garden. We were given an accessible room which was lovely and spacious. We were made to feel instantly welcome, the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was nice - a cold buffet with hot breakfast made to order which was delicious and really nicely presented

Having visited Tweedies Bar on previous visits to Grasmere, we decided to stay in the adjoining hotel. We have recently got a dog so the fact that they welcome dogs made it all the more appealing. We had a wonderful stay at Dale Lodge. The setting is beautiful, in the centre of Grasmere village, with some great walks on your doorstep. The staff made us feel very welcome and were very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was hearty, setting us up for the day! And being next door to Tweedies Bar, with its great ales and food, made it a perfect few days!!

We booked Dale Lodge in advance and paid a £50 deposit for an executive room. When we arrived at Dale Lodge to check in, our room had been allocated to to another guest. NOT the best start to a weekend break after driving for 2.5 hours. We also had our dog with us. The executive room is a dog friendly room - That's why we booked it!
The receptionist told us there were no other rooms and basically that was it!!! No apologies or let me see what I can do, no recommendations of other places and no offer of the refund of our deposit!
It was only when we protested and said but we booked in advance and have paid a deposit that she eventually decided to offer us an upgrade to The Muse rooms. We were puzzled because we knew that The Muse is NOT dog friendly and that these rooms were cheaper than The Executive Room. We questioned her statement. She became embarrassed and said she'd give us £10 discount on this upgraded room. £10 hahahaha. Seriously! We looked around the Muse room, it was basically a shed with a bed in it and a downstairs bathroom. We had booked a £180 EXECUTIVE room. We were being downgraded to a Muse room for £170 a night!!!
We insisted that the people who had been given our room in error were moved to their Muse Room. Why on earth we should even have had to have this conversion is beyond me. This receptionist didn't want to deal with her mistake. She seemed to think it perfectly acceptable to tell us there were no other rooms or that we'd be put in the muse for £10 less!!!
Now we'd been messed about for almost an hour at this point. Both of us were very hot, the dog was very hot, we hadn't been offered a drink or a seat whilst she went and sorted out the problem SHE had caused!!!!
Eventually this receptionist agreed to go and see the people she had put in our room and explain her error. We waited a further 40 mins. We were eventually shown to our executive room. The EXECUTIVE room (please view pictures taken) was an absolute disgrace. There is NOTHING executive about this room! The furniture is old and tatty and not well cleaned. The bed and furniture are in the style of shabby chic, but there's nothing chic about it. It is simply SHABBY!!!
The house keeping was appalling, there were human hairs (lots of!!!) in the bed, on the pillows and on the sheets!!! There was pubic hair in the bath!!! Human excrement in the toilet!!! And the furniture was ripped and old. No way on this earth were we going to pay £180 per night to stay in this room like this, especially after being inconvenienced and messed about for nearly 2 hours at this point. The room was a disgrace and the attitudes and handling of this situation by the receptionist and her manager was extremely rude and very disappointing !!! We asked to speak to the manager. We were kept waiting a further 30 minutes.
We showed the manager Laura Moss, the issues we had with the Executive room. She seemed to think it was perfectly acceptable for there to be hairs in the bed, bits on the floor, pubic hair in the bath, a rusty shower head, flaking paint, a dangerous window, that whilst she was stood there slammed down shut of it's own accord. Human excrement still in the toilet!!! In fact when I said this is not an executive room of executive standard she said , "That's your opinion and we had to get it ready in 40 minutes". There is no excuse for this poor level of cleaning service in a room that would cost £180.00 a night. We then pulled all the bed covers back to further inspect the linen whilst she was in the room. The sheets and the mattress on this bed were / are disgusting!!! They clearly had not been changed for weeks. We made the decision not to stay in this hotel. We felt very uncomfortable with the rude staff and we were not happy with the cleanliness/ standard of the room. We asked for our deposit to be refunded. This was refused until an argument ensued. Eventually we were refunded our £50. We left and found another far superior hotel less than 5 minutes away. This was very clean, dog friendly, with professional, friendly staff, better facilities, fantastic views from our garden view suite and it cost HALF the price of Dale Lodge! Grasmere is a very small village. Dale Lodge seems to have a very bad reputation amongst the locals and we also came across several people who were unhappy with the rooms and the service provided by this establishment. We made sure we told everyone about what had happened to us. Please save yourself the stress and stay elsewhere. This hotel is rubbish. Have a look at The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa or Moss Grove Hotel & Spa in Grasmere. These two places are far superior to Dale Lodge.
Dale Lodge you need to address the issues you have with you staff's attitudes and behaviour, the cleanliness of your rooms and toilets. AND you seriously need to upgrade your rooms to justify £180 per night!!! They are shabby, dirty and old fashioned!!!

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere. There are lots of high end beautiful hotels and B&B's In Grasmere worth payin...
