“A slightly disappointing stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

We booked a 2 night stay at The Daffodil as a last minute minimoon. We appeared to get a good deal using their "Come Dine with Us" offer. When we arrived we were quickly checked in, booked a table for 8.15pm and went up to our Junior Suite room. The room and communal areas were clean and spacious and the bed was very large and comfortable.

We went down and used the spa soon after we arrived. It was nice and clean but its not a swimming pool for swimming in. The jacuzzi is within the main swimming pool and beware sitting close to the power jets in the pool as you end up getting sprayed by water.

We went down to the sitting room at about 7.30 for a drink before our meal which was quiet and nicely decorated. As we were given a menu to peruse during this time when we sat down for our meal at 8.15 they took our order straight away - for starter and main. Soon after this we were presented with an amuse-bouche. This was very tasty. We then began our wait for our starters......

About 45 minutes later a waiter came across to assure us he had checked with the chef that our meal was on its way....this was a polite touch however 10 minutes later we were presented with our main course. They were apologetic when we pointed out we were yet to receive our starters. These were then quickly delivered to us.

I had ordered seabass and my partner had ordered venison "medium-rare" with a side or seasonal greens.

Soon after we had finished our starters we were presented with our main meals minus the seasonal greens. It was quite apparent they had been sat on hot plate, the venison was now well done.

We appreciate things do not always run smoothly and the proof of a good hotel is how these problems are dealt with. To this end we cannot fault The Daffodil for discounting our stay due to our less than 5 star experience.

The service at breakfast the following morning was to a similar disappointing standard, simple things like tea and coffee being served without milk and the hot food buffet running low on several things and we watched a couple wait more than 20 minutes for scrambled eggs...they still hadn't got them when we left.

However when we went down to breakfast the following morning it was like we were in a different hotel! Service was fantastic, quickly seated, given hot drinks within a couple of minutes and M's order of scrambled eggs and salmon was delivered very quickly.

Overall this is a smart hotel in a lovely setting. Service could definitely be improved upon and did spoil our stay however we did get the opportunity to see the hotel at its best on our final morning, it was just a shame it wasn't the same throughout.

We booked this hotel for a new year break and it looked like a lovely hotel but we were blown away from arrival to departure. The decor is modern and sophisticated and rooms very spacious, however what makes the hotel is the service which is as good as you would find in any 5 star hotel in the world. Attentive staff, fantastic attention to detail and each member of the team makes you feel valued. I will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone looking for an excellent standard of accommodation in a gorgeous setting in the lakes.

Room Tip: Superior rooms don't have a view so if you want a special view too - go for valley or lake view...

Thank you to the staff at the Daffodil for truly memorable occasion ,the event was inspired, the dining room looked amazing, the band were very good and the dance floor was full all evening.
The fireworks were magical and long lasting .
The only thing that stops me rating it excellent was a delay in our drinks order and a main course, both of which were pre ordered on the day. The staff were very apologetic and it was the only blip on what has been a fantastic New Years Eve.
Ps, The superior rooms we had were stated as ,not with lake view, but did have a valley view and were beautifully appointed and quiet. The reception staff deserve a special mention as excellent but all were very pleasant and courteous .
We did not visit the spar , perhaps next time.

Room Tip: The two superior rooms we had stated without lake view ,we could have paid more for ones with, check...

Stayed for a surprise birthday treat and it was a treat indeed. The rooms are lovely really modern with fantastic facilities I especially love the televisions that are at the end of the bed! The bathrooms were modern and the shower was so powerful you felt more then squeaky clean The breakfast was fantastic a wide fresh selection! Both cooked and cold breakfast were available. The cocktails in the hotel were lovely too, and very moorish. The town is lovely especially the ginger bread factory. Even went to the theatre during my stay. The spa was nice steam room and sauna was great but remember that the pool isn't for swimming its a spa pool to avoid any confusion. The staff in the spa could cheer up more and be more approachable, it's certainly unprofessional to be stood there gossiping which one another instead of serving people and just telling us to throw our towels over there with dismissal in your tone but that didn't spoil our stay! Would definitely return!

We have just returned from our second trip to the Daffodil this year and had another fabulous time. We first stayed in October and liked it so much that we decided to return for new year. The hotel is beautiful and the setting is stunning. The hotel has been beautifully refurbished and both the bedrooms and communal areas have been done to a great standard with real attention to detail. The food is excellent and the spa facilities are top class. This is the sort of hotel where you really can relax. The new year party was great and it was obvious how much thought had gone into arranging the event from the dry ice, afternoon tea, cocktail reception, gorgeously dressed room, great band and an amazing firework display. Thank you to all of the staff at the Daffodil who go out of their way to ensure that everything is just right - the service provided by the whole team cannot be faulted.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a lake view room. The extra cost is well worth it for the view.

After being diagnosed with Pneumonia, rather than change our plans, we waited until a couple of days before our holiday before we made the decision that it would probably be best not to go away until I'd improved further.
My husband phoned and explained the situation, however (Sarah) was not prepared to refund any of our money for the following reasons; (1) The agreed special price at the time of booking was based on full payment up front and was non refundable. (2) She said that she would allow us to move the holiday forward by up to 4 weeks.
We were not satisfied by this because: (1) The rate that we had been charged, if we'd made the reservation that week was the same as what we'd paid, and then it would have been refundable! (2) My health was not going to be solved in 4 weeks, as the treatment was for another 3 months.
As we are not in a financial position to throw money away, we went. We could do nothing strenuous, so we just strolled around Grasmere village, and the next day left.
We will never return, and would advise everybody not to fall for there deceiving business strategy, designed to make you believe they are doing something for you, when they are not! Your just being exploited.
Because of the blow air heating system, with my health as it was, we had to have the window open most of the time despite the cold.

Room Tip: Ask not to over look the car park.

We stayed at The Daffodil hotel for one night and got a good price on the internet. The hotel was in a very good location, a few minutes walk into Grasmere, and right next to the lake. Check-in was quick and easy.
Our room was spotlessly clean, nicely decorated and had a huge bed, the only downside was our view of the bins below, rather than any other scenery. My partner had booked for a couples massage, and when we arrived for this our massages we were separated, not a big deal but he would not have bothered booking one for himself individually as it is not his type of thing. We went to the spa after and it was lovely and clean.
Another downside for me was the main course I chose in the restaurant being sold out, and the second thing I chose also sold out. If I had been told this before being sat at our table with and having ordering drinks we would have chosen to eat at another restaurant in Grasmere, so my meal was disappointing.
At 8.30a.m we were awoken by the sound of glass smashing and bins being emptied-not what you expect on a break the Lake District. We then went down to breakfast where there was a queue and a long wait for a table.
If we were to get a good deal on this hotel in the future we would stay again as the hotel was nice, however, our stay at this hotel unfortunately did not live up to expectations.
