“"Fabulous new hotel in a stunning location"”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

My partner and I stayed at the Daffodil hotel from 6-8 September on a superb
2night special offer. When we arrived we were pleased to see how nice the
hotel looked, the reception area is huge and all so new and modern. We were
given a free room upgrade on arrival to a Fell view room which was lovely.
The bedroom was large and had been decorated/furnished to a very high
standard. The bed was super king and has to be one of the comfiest we've
slept in, including the pillows! A kettle is provided in the bedroom with an
assortment of hot drinks and biscuits. The bathroom again, was done to a
very high standard with a separate shower and bath, including a nice mirror
which lit up and Molten Brown toiletries which was a nice touch.

The SPA is fabulous, I would highly recommend spending time in there, the
spa pool is huge, with several hydrotherapy jets, it was bliss! The steam
room is the largest I've ever been in and again it's all been finished to a
high standard.

The restaurant is located on the first floor, with beautiful
views overlooking the fells and lake, we had breakfast on both mornings,
which was really good with a large selection of cooked food as well as
continental. We had an evening meal on our second night and it was
delicious, very good menu and all at a reasonable price. We had drinks in
the hotel bar on both nights which was nice but could do with some more
tables as we had to wait for a seat on the Friday evening.

I have to mention the restaurant and bar manager, Swabnil, he was so helpful and pleasant, always a smile on his face, we had a few conversations with him about the hotel and he really does care about the running of the hotel. He always spoke so positive, he's a credit to
the Daffodil and we enjoyed our conversations with him, thank you!

The hotel is located just on the edge of Grasmere village so it's within a
five minute stroll into the village. Grasmere is a lovely place with a good
selection of little shops, restaurants and bars, and of course nice scenery!
I would recommend Tweddies bar, good food and a nice atmosphere. We had a
great stay at the Daffodil hotel, I wish it well for the future and hope to
return soon!

Room Tip: A room with a fell or lake view is a must!

My family of four (2 adults & 2 younger adults) have just spent a very enjoyable long weekend at the Daffodil hotel. Our rooms (304 & 305) were large and very comfortable with excellent beds, good quality tea, coffee & biscuits etc. The bathrooms were huge with a powerful shower, fluffy towels & Molton Brown toiletries. Everything was spotless, new (of course) & well equipped (even an iron & ironing board). We paid extra for a lake view which was lovely but our windows were not large compared to those on the 2nd floor.

Breakfast was very good (with vegetarian sausages available, which is always a bonus for us veggies). We ate dinner in the restaurant one evening. There were three veggie options (nice to have a choice) but they were a bit pricey for what they were. Interestingly, the menu in the room quoted £14.95 for the veggie main courses but in the restaurant this appeared to have been changed to £12.95 so perhaps they have already had a rethink about some prices. We had the tagliatelle with mushrooms and Portobello mushroom burgers. The tagliatelle was good although a bit rich whilst the burger consisted of two mushrooms & some smoked cheese on a roll with a few salad leaves & some chunky chips. It tasted fine but we felt it was a bit basic for £12.95. Drinks are reasonably priced (Becks & Gin & tonic both £3.30).

One evening we sat out on the terrace looking over the lake to have a drink; this was very pleasant and the terrace area is nicely done even though the garden isn’t quite finished. The staff seemed a bit confused about whether or not they were offering table service for those sitting outside. This would seem to be a good idea on sunny days as a lot of people were sitting outside but the bar is on the first floor (the ground floor bar wasn’t open at all).
We weren’t tempted to sit in the bar which is small and accessed via the dining room (not a separate room). This set up seemed a bit odd as there is a huge sitting room next door which didn’t seem to be used by anyone. It felt as though a bar could be more appropriately situated here- maybe the owners will change this in due course.

The spa is lovely, we really enjoyed the hydrotherapy pool, sauna & steam room but the opening hours were disappointing (10am-6pm). This meant you had to get back pretty early from a day’s walking or sight-seeing in order to use the facilities. I guess this might be a feature of the hotel being newly opened & hopefully there will be extended opening hours as it becomes more established. The staff were very accommodating allowing us to use the spa on our last day after vacating our rooms.

We received a warm welcome at the Daffodil; we did gain a sense of staff finding their feet a little but they were always helpful and polite. We would definitely return to the hotel next time we are in Grasmere and would recommend it to others.

The hotel is well situated across the road from Dove cottage & a short walk from Grasmere village. On the way into the village you will see a chocolate shop called Cocoa Hearts. Here you can buy delicious hand-made chocolates or have a go at making them yourselves. My daughter and I spent a very enjoyable 90+ minutes making our own chocolates to bring home (£15- 12 chocolates each). The mother & daughter team who run the shop are lovely & friendly, they made me a cup of tea and offered marshmallows & melted chocolate whilst our chocolates were setting. We would recommend calling in & having a go. If you are buying chocolates; I can recommend the peanut butter & chilli varieties (I’m sure the others are delicious but haven’t tried them all!).

We have just spent 2 nights at the Daffodil Hotel and loved it. We booked on a KGB deals offer so were fully aware that we would have a none view room. The room itself was lovely, massive comfy bed, lovely big flat screen TV on the wall, various teas, fresh filter coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits, a beautiful bathroom with Molton Brown products.
We decided to eat both nights in the hotel and the food was beautiful as was breakfast, buffet style, plenty of choice and the food was all piping hot and replenished regularly. We found the service to be good both evenings and all of the staff were really friendly and helpful.
The spa facilities were great, lovely big steam room, sauna and the spa pool was amazing moving round to a different part of the pool every few minutes to try the different jets and water was lovely and warm. The only thing we would have liked would have been robes in the room that you could take down to the spa.
The hotel is in a fabulous setting and when the grounds have matured/been landscaped it will be amazing. Plenty of car parking and only a short walk into Grasmere. The "walkers bar" isn't what we would class as a walkers bar and I wouldn't go in there with muddy boots as it is just too nice, needs to be made more cozy and welcoming. All in all we had a fantastic couple of nights and would love to return soon.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from 5th-7th September (2 nights) through a Travelzoo offer. We had not requested a room with a view but were very pleasantly surprised by the room given (116). It was above reception and overlooking the car park but also had fantastic views of the mountains around Grasmere village from the Juliet balcony.

The room was massive, a huge comfortable bed, large Samsung Smart TV, all tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom was large with a huge bath, seperate shower, light up mirror etc.

The only complaints I could find about the room were that I could not find a shaver point anywhere in the bathroom or the main room. Luckily I had brought an adapter. There are no proper wardrobes as such, at the side of the bed are 2 cupboards(?) where there were some strange shelving arrangements which you just could not or would want to use. The other wardrobe/cupboard was also strange as it had shelving about 6 inches wide and a main wardrobe area with about 6 coathangers in it but nearly all the space was taken up with a massive ironing board and iron. Therefore you could only hang up a very small amount of clothes. If you were staying any longer than 2 days then it would be very annoying indeed. Most strange!

There were very amusing cartoon charicature pictures around the corridors, thank goodness we thought as the corridors are a total maze and not properly signposted with only names on the main doors. We kept getting lost by taking wrong turnings all the time.

The breakfasts are superb, beautifully cooked and plenty of it. We ate in the restaurant on the first night as part of the deal and again the food was superb. Drinks prices excellent, glass of house wine £3.75 and pint of Becks £3.30. We booked our evening meal for 18:30 and were the only people there at that time. Service was very slow and other people trickled in from around 19:00 onwards. Service continued to be very slow though and we finally left the restaurant at 20:10.

We used the pool and steam room. The latter is very big and can hold around 20 people. The pool was also superb and has various jets all around. The only problem with the pool was if somebody went to use the water pipe jets on their back/head etc., you got splashed even if you were sat at the opposite end of the pool-very annoying.

The reception area looks impressive and is huge, but needs some pictures and large tubs of plants.

Despite the few minor niggles mentioned we had a fantastic stay. It was a 10 minute walk to the village centre and there are fantastic walks from Grasmere to Rydal via both lake sides.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the car park still have fantastic views......

We visited the Daffodil after it had been open for only a few weeks and we were generally impressed. It was spotlessly clean, our bedroom was very comfortable (the bed was one of the largest I have ever slept in) and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was excellent and it was a pleasure to eat while looking out over the lake. The view from our room across to Helm Crag was also stunning.
If a few teething details are sorted out I would give the hotel a top rating without hesitation. For instance, the foyer and reception area was a bit of a surprise and belies the hotel's traditional lakeland exterior. It is smart but quite austere and lacking in features: more typical of a city hotel. Similarly, the lounge with its serried ranks of seats is more like a luxurious waiting room than somewhere to relax. Some additional features and perhaps a few plants would do a great deal to make both these areas more welcoming and comfortable.
We were only staying for a couple of nights and the storage facilities in our bedroom were adequate but I am not sure whether they would be enough for anyone staying a week. The bath was large and very comfortable but one of our party was elderly and found that the lack of a grab handle made it almost impossible for her to pull herself out of her bath - again, a matter of detail.
I don't want to appear too critical because the hotel is very good and everyone is clearly trying very hard to make it excellent. They are off to a good start and I I am sure that they will succeed.

We visited the hotel to see its new incarnation as we had stayed many times before over the years. The hotel had been gutted and completely modernised to a very high standard. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Our room was large, very comfortable with every amenity. We ate in the restaurant. Food was excellent and extremely reasonable. The drinks also reasonably priced. All in all a lovely break and look forward to returning. Only criticism is I found the reception area too stark.

this has got to be the best hotel we have ever stayed at! we stayed in the superior suite which was beautiful and could have fit 4 other people in the bed if it wasn't our honeymoon ;-) the room was spotless and had a wonderful views out over the lake
the staff were extremely helpful, polite and could not be more courteous. the spa facilities were spectacular and the massage we received was exceptional
we had almost all our meal at the hotel, breakfast was amazing with a huge selection at the buffet, lunch was lovely (try the cheese and pickle sandwich the pickle is to die for) and the evening meal was very good too, so good we had it the both nights we stayed
the hotel is also in a brilliant location just across the road from the William Wordsworth museum
we would definitely come back again if we were ever back up in the lake district
