“Kitty Crag@ Lancrigg”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

For: Kitty Crag is a lovely house set in the hotel grounds. Clean, warm & comfortable- very pleasant and quiet with guest lounge. Staff helpul and grounds lovely. Can't comment on food as we were usually out. Lovely walks right from front door though at least 1/2 mile from Grasmere if walking is not your thing.
Against: Erratic phone signal so difficult to call home.
Driveways and parking areas very rough and confined. Difficult to manoevre safely due to loose stones, sloping ground and overgrown bushes.
Woodland walk from Kitty Crag to hotel lovely but treacherous in dark (torches provided)- use driveways instead.

Room Tip: Don't try this unless you have a 4x4- my poor old car really suffered!

A fantastic stay at Lancrigg. The food was amazing, every meal a delight. Staff were helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was cosy and clean and with lovely old pieces of furniture. The location is quiet, beautiful and stunning. So lovely to be able to walk from the door. We loved it so much we had to stay for an extra night!

Room Tip: John Richardson is amazing. It has a freestanding bath in the room, its own entrance to the garden...

My second trip to Lancrigg in about a year, and just remembered what I have been missing on my travels. The drive up from Manchester was busy, being the start of the Easter weekend, and the weather was absolutely freezing, but once we came off the motorway it was a whole new world.
The traffic disappeared and the beautiful scenery and sunshine of the Lake District with the snow on the hills was breathtaking. From the motorway to Lancrigg Hotel was another half an hour. On entering the warmth of the Darwin room it felt like we had entered paradise. Heaven was yet to come!
Without a doubt it was definitely one of the best vegetarian meals I have ever eaten. Roast butternut squash, hazelnut and orange tart with griddled peppers and courgettes with a piquant tomato sauce, dauphinoise potaoes and steamed broccoli. Cooked to perfection. Eat your heart out, M.& S.! Even more was yet to follow. I missed starters because I remembered Lancrigg portions are normally large, but made up for it by pigging out on 2 ½ desserts! The crème brulee with rhubarb and cardamom, followed by home made ginger and honey ice cream, then I couldn’t even resist finishing off my daughter’s chocolate and toffee nut sundae! What the hell, you only live once, make the most of it!
I did try to make up for it with a walk round the beautiful gardens afterwards, only to be confronted with the sight of a small herd of deer only metres away. They obviously knew Lancrigg is a vegetarian hotel because they showed no fear at all of a fat non-vegetarian coming their way.
Unfortunately I heard that Lancrigg Hotel may be changing hands later in the year. I hope the future owners realize the superb standards of quality, restauranteurship and hotel management the current owners have built up over time.
Don't forget to ask the hotel owner Mr Whittington for his anecdotes, especially the one about the big Texan cattle rancher who booked in by mistake for one evening, but ended up staying another three, or about the squatter owl, and last but not least the one about the naked woman in the wardrobe! Basil Fawlty beware!
All in all, this is one hotel and restaurant one should not miss!

Room Tip: Try and get any room at the front of the hotel. If you're an early riser you'll catch the wi...

An unexpectedly cold and snowy weekend turned into a warm, nourishing and relaxing break at Lancrigg. We liked it so much we stayed an extra night!
The fire in lounge was always banked up and allowed us to look at the breathtaking views from a warm and comfy armchair. When venturing out we were immediately walking in the beautiful landscape, seeing mountains and waterfalls, with no need of the car. Grasmere and its charms, including Dove Cottage was only 10 mins on foot.
The vegetarian menu was excellent and the staff charming and thoughtful. Can't wait to go again.

Rooms were a little dated, however, as the owners are environmentally friendly any change could be classed as an unnecessary waste. Food was absolutley first class with a great choice. Would highly recommend Lancrigg Vegetarian Hotel.

Room Tip: Would Reccomend the Dickens room, with fantastic views over the mountains. The room is also equiped...

Lovely place all round. Great care is taken at every opportunity - with the food, the bedrooms, the public areas, and maintenance of the grounds. We were made welcome from the outset, with a fire being got going in the lounge by Kerrtu just for us. We stayed most nights in "Larch" which is a spectacular room in Kitty Crag, a separate building a few minutes walk away through the wood. Larch has extensive views over the valley from windows in the bedroom and the bathroom. This hotel feels both top quality and relaxed too (e.g. you might see people having dinner in slippers) - what more could you want.

Have just returned for 3 great nights at Lancrigg. Almost everyone staying at the time had been there before - some many times, which speaks for itself!
This was our third stay and the food was even better than we remembered. As a vegetarian being able to choose anything from an extensive menu is quite exceptional.
Walks from Lancrigg are great - visit the newly opened NT house, Allan Bank in Grasmere or hike up to Easedale Tarn. There is no need to move the car at all.
The lounge is particularly relaxing with a lovely atmosphere.
It is a very individual and special place.

Room Tip: Silver Howe is lovely, but if wanting to choose a more budget room Wordworth is fine.
