We have use this hotel once before and based on this experience decided to pay a further visit. Yes, we were disappointed.

The Hotel has changed hands and the restaurant food is now poor and warmed up, the waiters are foreign and can just about say Yes and No, there is no atmosphere at all, we were certainly disappointed. If we had know before we arrived that there had been a change in Management we would have looked further into this. Under Chris the hotel was splendid and this is what we based our decision to pay a further visit on.

Room tip: If you have a room close to the river, ensure the weather has been fine for some weeks as you are constantly woken up with the noise.

The hotel had been recommended to us but we later learned that there had been a change of management and it had really gone downhill. Although the food was good we waited a long time to be served and there were clearly not enough staff in the dining room or kitchen. Waiting staff were flustered and disorganised and we felt largely ignored. Waiting an hour for a starter is not acceptable. We were also wrongly charged and didn’t receive the champagne that friends had ordered for us. All the small gestures that make you feel welcomed were missing.
Very disappointed - wouldn’t recommend at the moment.

The Hotel has indeed recently experienced a change of ownership and we are working hard to ensure our guests receive only the highest standards of customer service. Clearly on this occasion the standard of service in our Restaurant fell short of this, but we do hope that you will come back and visit us again soon.

A family trip: comfortable room with a bath big enough for me to lie in and float!!
Breakfast hearty: dinner was well presented, laid-back with a late-arrival seamlessly integrated, great dining room (bright conservatory) and good service. Good wine list although the cheap Burgundy ran out on the 1st night!

This is a review of the restaurant only. Our evening was a perfect example of how a good meal can be spoiled by bad service. We enjoyed excellent food. However, the overall experience was very adversely affected by the rather inept, quite perfunctory, and very much too slow service. Hopefully the chef can seize control of the front of the house and bring it up to par with the food. Until then, I suggest you dine elsewhere.

We returned to Rothay Garden for the August bank holiday weekend with some trepidation as we are regular visitors and we had heard that the hotel had recently changed ownership.

While some of the old faces were not around we found that the hotel was as good as ever and had no complaints. All of the meals we had were lovely. We enjoyed excellent dinners on both evenings and the delicious breakfasts set us up for a day on the fells.

We can only speak of our own experiences, and appreciate that it’s not been the same for others, but we thought that the Rothay Garden was as good as our previous visits.
