This is an excellent hotel, the staff are very friendly and the service was second to none. We stayed in a Loft Suite which was spacious with stunning views. I am a vegetarian and the choice in the restaurant was extensive and the food of a high quality. I had also ordered and paid for a half bottle of champagne for when we arrived, as they didn't have any, they gave us a full bottle for the same price. If you are looking for somewhere special to stay with a plethora of great walks on your doorstep, this is the place to go.

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights at the end of July 09. The bedroom was very small and there was no room for two suitcases. The bathroom was also very small. It looked like a modest sized room was made very small to create an en suite bathroom. I know that hotels have to run to make money but at Rothay Garden it was apparent that operational efficiency was parmount and guests were merely objects in a system. It lacked a friendly atmosphere that was so obvious in all the other hotels and bars that we visited for lunch and dinner.

I had chosen the hotel because of the NEARBY liesure facility which is at least a 15 MINUTE DIVE AWAY. I didn't bother. There are several better hotels in the area.

We began with a less than welcoming arrival to be shown to a room that was of good quality, clean and well appointed. The food in the restaurant was very good and the bar meals were of good value. It is a pity that the service did not match up to the other aspects of the hotel. We felt that the staff were doing their individual best but that there was a lack of feeling that the customer was valued that came primarily from the way the hotel was being run.

Booked this trip with Travel Zoo so the rates were excellent. If I had paid the full price I would have been even more disappointed than I was with the food: lack of really hot water for a bath: many of the staff had limited English, so service in the restaurant was limited to - You finished? You welcome? Thank you. Some of the management staff were lacking in personality and professionalism while others did try hard. Had read reviews before booking and was looking forward to the most gourmet of meals. It seemed the Master Chef was away on holidays the week of our stay! The dinner menu food was generally good but not worth £42.50 if we had paid the going rate. The breakfast was satisfactory and no different from any ordinary hotel we had stayed in. On a positive note the gardens are beautiful, the location superb and the hotel furnishings are excellent. However the highlight of any holidays for me is the quality of the food and excellent service - this was not the case with the Rothay Garden Hotel.

we stayed here on a red letter day gourmet break and the food was outsanding. bed room small but comfortable, lovely bath robes but no bath. staff pleasant and welcoming. Welcome pack at the hotel states that use of the leisure facilities at langdale estates was included, but this is not mentioned on the web site , would have been welcome on a two night stay as th weather left a lot to be desired

I stayed with my partner at the hotel for a short romantic break over two nights. It can be seen from the road and is very well presented and in an ideal location for exploring Grasmere and the surrounding area. We found a space in the car park and on checking in were taken to a small but immaculate room. A great deal of money has clearly been spent on the hotel and it was faultless from the Reception to our room.

We were expecting great things, given first appearances, but unfortunately the level of customer service can only be described as especially poor. Money may have been invested in the facilities, but I doubt the staff training budget has received much investment. There appears to be a general lack of management, with some staff trying to please but no obvious leadership or guidance. There is a "trainee manager" listed in the welcome pack - I wonder what bad habits they are picking up from their mentors!

Breakfast the next day was below average, with my choice of full English probably acceptable in a roadside cafe, but certainly not in what is supposed to be a 4 star hotel - overcooked and poorly presented. Last orders for breakfast are at 10am, we arrived well before this but had to wait for a table. The staff then made it clear that we had overstayed our welcome as they attempted to clear up (except the dirty plates on our table) and it was time for us to leave.

In the evening, we opted to eat in the hotel restaurant. The food was impressive and of a high quality, but the whole experience was somewhat tarnished by the two charmless and humourless floor managers.

There is also continuous cushioned bench seating down one side of the room - acceptable if you are relaxing with a drink in a pub, but try getting comfortable if you are attempting to enjoy a formal sit down meal! Whilst we were sat there, the couples either side swapped seats as on the opposite side of the tables are standard dining chairs - a very bizarre set up. I wonder if the proprietor has attempted to eat a meal in this inappropriate choice of seating.

The hotel is short of waiting on staff and the dining experience both at breakfast (the breakfast chef likes to burn things, be warned!) and in the evening totally lacks the 4 star experience. There are no niceties - don't expect to be asked if you have enjoyed your meal or would like another drink as you will be waiting a long time. The table was never set properly and requests for extra items, missing cutlery and various condiments were common place.

My partner and I observed one of the staff eating the remains of a guest's breakfast as they cleared a table on the other side of the dining room - maybe they also need to feed their staff better! Whilst eating one meal, the guests on the tables either side both complained about problems with the service or food quality so it was clearly not just us.

To be fair, although the beds are very comfortable, the walls between the rooms are particularly thin and you will hear every noise (and I mean every noise!) from your neighbours. Ear plugs are recommended.....

When we checked out, there were no questions about our stay - money just changed hands and we left. With this standard of customer service I wonder how many repeat bookings this hotel gets. There is reference to how much the owner of many years has invested in his venue. Maybe he should now call in the "Hotel Inspector" for some advice on the level of service guests expect in a 4 star establishment!

There are much better hotels and guest houses in the Lake District. Ones with well trained staff that know the meaning of excellent customer service. Pity the Rothay Garden isn't one of these......

Stayed at this hotel earlier this year while on business. Recently refurbished and tastefully done. I paid a supplement of £40 for one of the superior rooms in the first floor overlooking the garden, with patio doors (but no balcony!). The room was very well furnished and tastefully done, it was great to see egyptian cotton bed linen. The drawback was that the room was very small for a standard room so disappointing for a superior room and with the sloping ceiling in the bathroom getting into the shower needs careful negotiation. The other oddity in the room is the very small TV positioned at a strange angle in the corner.
The hotel is obviously not targeted towards the business traveller, the only dining options were a formal dinner at £40+ or a very limited snack menu. The restaurant was very light and spacious and breakfast was very good, if a little limited in choice.
Ther are no leisure facilities or gym (I suppose if you are on holiday you are probably walking) but you can use the facilities of the Langdale Hotel free of charge.
