“Wonderful experience, great food, wine, staff and rooms.”
Reviewed July 8, 2009

Perfectly positioned on the edge of Grasmere, the Rothay Garden Hotel offers superb accommodation, great food and delicious wine with an attentive staff who were more than happy to answer our questions and provide advice. What a delight to find a boutique hotel hat combines the best of the old with the best of the new in such a beautiful location.
Spa facilities were available free of charge locally if we had chosen to use them.

We read the reviews and decided to spend three nights in this hotel having not been to the Lakes for over 15yrs . We enjoy our peace and quiet and great food and this hotel did not dissapoint. The room was not the largest but was very clean and had all the facilities you would need. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the food was to die for.

Just back from a couple of days in the Lake District where we stayed at this fabulous hotel. Had a great deal through Laterooms. We had a loft suite, very clean, modern.....in fact very sumptuous, and first time we've ever had a flat screen TV on the bathroom wall! We even had a little box of luxury choccies provided, which was a lovely touch in addition to the tea and (ground) coffee facilities. We didn't have dinner as we had already planned to eat in the village, but we had breakfast which was cooked to order, in addition to cereals, yoghurts, freshly squeezed juice, fresh fruit salad etc. It was lovely, and the service was impeccable. All the staff we came in contact with were very pleasant and helpful with a ready smile. Couldn't fault our stay in any way. I'm sure had there been an a la carte menu we may well have eaten in the hotel, but it seemed pointless to pay for extra courses we didn't want. Hope to return one day.

My partner and I have been to the lake district a few times, it is our one weekend away every year without the kids! We found Rothay Gardens on the internet and checked it out on trip advisor and thought it sounded really nice. Well be were certainly not disappointed...this Hotel is 1st class in everyway. We stayed in one of the loft suites, wonderful decor, roomy, comfortable and stylish. The food is out of this world, hotel service impecable and very friendly. All staff work so hard and long hours and considering this, they truly are always friendly and professional. Great value for money here...I would recommend to anyone. We will certainly be going back and I cant wait!

I would thoroughly agree with all the positive comments: The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. I’ve also travelled extensively and the room was one of the best I’ve stayed in for both the price and the cleanliness.
The breakfasts are all cooked to order and despite being busy arrived in time for us after finishing the fruit and cereal starters.
The location of the hotel, next to a meandering river with a balcony that had views overlooking the adjacent hills is very relaxing and calming. I’m already thinking about another break in the same hotel in the next few weeks and would recommend this hotel to one and all.

Really nice location for this hotel, pleasant rooms, very polite and helpful staff. Breakfast was superb and our evening meal was really good ..the chef obviously knows what he is about..or so I thought (more later).. This was a really nice romantic get away and we would have given a higher rating . The hotel has so many positives but as we walked across the carpark on our morning of departure we saw a delivery vehicle pull in with some garden centre logo on we presumed the gardner had arrived but we were shocked to see this was a supplier for the kitchen delivering vegtables..the problem we had was that the vehicle was dirty, the driver was scruffy and had filthy hands and clothes .There was a dog in the front of the van !!! and as we walked round the back the interior of the van was obvoiusly used for gardening equipment and machinary. Not a very good hygenic way for food to be delivered !!!!! so for this reason we have to give an average rating for a nice hotel. I felt that this was not a good advert for the hotel and as I am an enviromental health officer i was corncerned.! Overall our experience was fantastic but this is not what we expected from hotel a high calibre hotel.

A great location. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean, with lovely views over the mountains, and the staff are friendly and efficient. The breakfast is first class. Just a few small improvements would take this very nice hotel up one more level. (1) An "a la carte" evening meal menu is needed in addition to the fixed price 3 course menu, to cater guests who book on B&B terms. I never eat three course meals, and £42.50 - the cost of the fixed price menu - is a heavy price to pay for a small appetite. This, combined with a restricted bar food menu (soup, sandwiches and cold plates only) led to us chosing an excellent Bistro in the nearby village instead of eating "in". Great for us, but potential revenue lost to the hotel. (2) Very few modern 4 star hotels do not serve proper, decaffeinated coffee. This is one of the few that doesn't. Rooms are equipped with cafetieres, so it should be easy to provide sachets of de-caf coffee for guests who request it, and have de-caf available in the bar and restaurant. (3) The breakfast menu was excellent, and everything was beautifully cooked and presented. The smoked haddock and poached egg "kedgeree" was particularly good. But, in an area where locally produced honeys, marmalade and jams are so readily available it would be nice to have small dishes of local preserves on the breakfast table instead of the ubiquitous commercially produced (and evironmentally unsound) mini jars. (4) In-room Instructions on how to operate the high-tech bath taps would be helpful (I wasted a bath full of cold water before working out how to operate them). (5)We learned on arrival that the hotel has a link up with the spa/gym/pool at nearby Langdale. This information was not on the hotel's website a couple of days before we went, so we did not take swimming gear or gym kit. This was a pity as a gym session and swim would have been the ideal way to fill one very wet morning. Hopefully the website has now been updated?? And finally, (6) the well tended and pretty gardens were spoiled to a degree by the large number of cigarette ends scattered in the borders. A couple of ashtrays near the beautiful rustic garden benches would not go amiss. I would recommmend this hotel, but would advise friends to eat "out" in the evenings and take their own coffee - which makes this, to my mind a very nice 3* or 3* + hotel, not 4 *.
