We stayed last year and were very happy. This year did not disappoint, the hotel and spa has been well maintained and is lovely and clean. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing and even though the weather was rubbish, we really enjoyed sitting on the veranda after a hot spa with an ice cold cider! We had dinner two nights, which were both perfect, very tasty and lots to choose from. Breakfast had a wide variety but the cooked wasn't excellent - just average. The loft suite was spacious and high quality with great views (of the rain!) and the staff were friendly and helpful. The cafe down the road 'greens' was a great lunch. Thanks :)

Stayed here for a second year running with my wife and it was even better than last year. Rooms excellent, particularly the riverside suites (1-4), food great (three courses and great quality - portions ideally sized, not too large). Wine is also good but staff could benefit from reading the foreword in the wine list whereby if ordered early then it would be opened ahead of time. Spa very relaxing with outlook on to the gardens. Breakfast menu varied and of excellent quality. Having experienced what I just have with the Wordsworth I will definitely be back at the Rothay and would encourage others to do the same.

First visit here as part of a deal. On the edge of Grassmere one of the 'quieter' areas in the Lakes. The hotel is absolutely excellent. Lovely decor and the staff and level of service they provided was faultless. After walking and getting soaked we relaxed in the spa then got rid of the rest of the aches and pains with the complimentary champagne. The food was nothing less than top quality, beautifully presented and served by their well trained and professional , friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: All good unless you dont like using stairs as there are three floors no lift.

We did a 3 night break for my 50th birthday the hotel is lovely, spa is fantastic with beautiful relaxing views, food fantastic, staff were really courteous and helpful. If you are visiting the lakes I would definitely recommend it, Grasmere is a lovely little quiet village.

I have been coming to this hotel for as long as i can remember. The food, the location, the staff everything is sublime, if i am completely honest its hard to pick fault with anything at all. So it seems only fitting that we came for my anniversary. As expected, my girlfriend enjoyed it as much as i always have, hopefully returning for my birthday and our anniversary next year.

Room Tip: All rooms are well equipped and quiet, comfy beds.

Stayed for 3 nights recently.

Room lovely and well appointed....only comment would be needs a soap dish and was surprised there was no night turn down service, this meant the you came in from your day out, had a cup of tea, used all the milk and had to,have dirty cups around till morning. Also a fridge would be good. Bed huge (room 17).

Evening meal was great, however 3 nights of this can be a bit in the rich side.....great wine selection.

Breakfast lovely, however, out of date yoghurts in the display.

Staff were the best I have had in a hotel like this, just attentive enough without you feeling someone is on your shoulder all the time.

The spa,was disappointing, tiny compared to the pictures and by no means private....we could see almost all of it from our balcony, this put me off using it and also the fact you had to walk through reception in your bath robe to get there!!

The Rothay gardens Hotel, lies at the north end of Grasmere village in the Lake District. Set in beautiful maintained gardens the Hotel has a nice feel as you enter into the Main Lobby.
That spell was soon broken as the young man at reception said that he did not have us down as having a reservation. We were a party of four and the Hotels confirmation by email, even gave the room numbers 4 and 5. Panic set in as we were booked for the weekend, however, it took another young female receptionist to sort the mess out. Seemingly, they had put another guest in room 4. Complimentary drinks were given whilst they sorted the problem out.

Eventually, we got to our rooms which were indeed very pleasant. Bedroom and bathroom were of the highest standard.

Our friends who we were with, have stayed at this hotel three times and always had good service in the restaurant. On this occasion even they said the service had slipped.

On our first night we were at the bar and asked for a Ricard./Pernod, I might add that half the staff were Europeans and on this occasion two were serving in the bar. They did not understand our drink requests, a minor point, but later I did spot a bottle of pernod on the shelf.

Why oh why don't hoteliers train the staff properly. The same is for the servers at the table, who teaches them to reach across, a hotel of this standard should know better.

On our first night in the restaurant, after the main course we were asked if we wanted the desert menu. It took over an hour for someone to come back for the order. We were not asked if we wanted coffee, again minor points but the service was indeed slow.

On the second night in the restaurant, I ordered poached salmon in a sauce. when it came it was obvious that my course had been stuck on a warming plate as the sauce had set and had formed a skin, the salmon was over cooked.

The breakfast was just as bad, although it was served to you (no buffet here) the fried eggs were hard and the bacon hard. I think they had cooked a batch beforehand and served from there tins. Not impressed whatsoever.

It might seem as if am nit picking but at £112 per person per night you would expect it to be perfect.

When we go to the Lakes again, I might just try another hotel
