Very helpful and welcoming reception from Angela and Martin (who with his background, was a mine of information about open water swimming and water sports, very useful for our forthcoming sportive in Derwentwater the day after arrival) and very tolerant of our small mountain of luggage for the weekend. Good hearty breakfasts with plenty of choice, and very obliging to individual requests. A great choice for those, like us, who want a break or weekend away in a natural environment, as the lake is literally across the road and very accessible, and there is a beautiful walking/running path around most of Grasmere. Although we didn't take cycles, it hardly needs to be said that this is also a fabulous area for biking, and nicely set between the two of the favourite Lakes resorts, Keswick and Ambleside, so ideal for triathletes/multi sports types. Comfortable airy room, with a fantastic view of the lake. We appreciated the personal touches which are often lacking in bigger establishments. Definitely a B&B to return to, thanks Angela & Martin.

Room Tip: We had the room without an en suite (but it still has its own private bathroom) which is light and a...

I'm not normally one to write reviews, whether good or bad, but Angela and Martin were such lovely people, I thought they deserved a mention and a 5 start rating! Our stay in the Lakes was just a quick weekend away, but it was made all the more pleasant by such a warm and friendly welcome from our friendly, down-to-earth and genuine hosts. They couldn't do more to help, providing great local advice, information and recommendation's as well as a generous and tasty breakfast to set us up nicely for the day!

Don't forget, this is a good ol' British B&B so if you want a concierge, a spa and a 24 hour bar you'll need to go down the road and pay thee times as much...but if great local knowledge, a shower and a kettle will do you, then you won't far wrong here!

...and if you're feeling brave, you can even join Martin for his 6am daily swim in the lake!
(we weren't, so didn't...but maybe next time!)

My husband and I stayed here overnight during our recent coast to coast walk and Angela and Martin were wonderful hosts providing a warm welcome after a very long and tiring day. The location on Grasmere lake was just fantastic, the room was spacious and comfortable with a full sized bathroom and breakfast the next morning was superb. Everything we needed to resume our walk feeling restored. Unfortunately I became unwell and was unable to walk to Patterdale that day but Angela was marvellous, allowing me to sit in the guest lounge and then driving me to our next nights accommodation. One in a million and we will certainly be returning in the future.

We stayed for 2 nights with our 2 year old daughter and had a large family en-suite room at the front of the house over the garage. The room itself was very spacious and the bed very comfortable. The welcome and attention to detail that Angela and Martin provide is second to none and it was our best B&B experience by far. Breakfast was also very good and inlcuded local ingredients. Lovely to wake up and see Grasmere in the early light. Grasmere village is only a 15 minute walk away. We look forward to returning soon.

Banerigg is a delightful guest house near Grasmere overlooking the lake. My wife, son and I stayed overnight last week and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Angela and Martin could not be more friendly or helpful and between them they also produce a fantastic breakfast.
The rooms are comfortable and clean and there is a decent sized living room for guests to share.
You can easily stroll into Grasmere in 10 to 15 minutes and you pass William Wordsworth's pretty Dove Cottage on the way.
Banerigg is on the road between Grasmere and Windemere and so there is a fair bit of traffic during the day, but your sleep won't be disturbed at night.

Our family stayed at Banerigg this Easter – all 14 of us including a 14 month baby. We were bowled over by the warm, and encompassing welcome, that Angela and Martin gave to our family. Literally nothing was a problem. It has to be said I have never hugged the owner of a B&B when I check out, but this time I did!

All the rooms have names, as opposed to numbers, and reflect the hills and fells in the area. We stayed, with our baby, in ‘Fairfield’ on the second floor of the house. This room faces the woodland to the rear of the property. Whilst the view is not long ranging, given that there is a hill close to the back of the property, there was a lot of interest in the woodland behind. Yes there is a view of the shed and the yard, but in no way offensive. The room was spacious and complete with a firm bed. Angela had supplied a cot for us to use and, rather helpfully, contacted us in advance to suggest that we bring our own bedding to make sure that our little lad felt at home. It should be noted that there is no coffee or tea making facilities in the room or a TV – why do you need a TV in the Lakes anyway? Coffee and Tea can be made in an area just outside the Lounge. Fairfield has en suite facilities with a bath but no shower. There is a shower on the floor below and as such not a huge hardship to pop down in the morning and have a shower whilst the tea is brewing!

We found the Lounge to be a wonderful retreat after a day out walking. Warm drinks, and home-made biscuits/cheese scones from Angela, were really welcome. We all relaxed around the fire of an evening and utilised the extensive selection of games and books on offer. Martin’s insights in to walks around the area were also useful in shaping our plans for the following day.

Evening meal suggestions were candidly provided so one really knew the pros and cons of each location. We can recommend ‘Potted Out’ in Grasmere (if you mention that you are staying at Banerigg you get 10% off!) and Tweedies Bar at The Dale Lodge Hotel, again in Grasmere. The Swan Inn on the Keswick Road was what you might well expect from a Hotel chain (owned by Macdonald Hotels). We had heard mixed reviews of the Travellers Rest, but on this occasion the majority of our meals were good. In respect of feeding little people we found that all of the pubs and restaurants were happy to heat up food in a microwave for us. The exception to this is Tweedies Bar where we were told that due to Health & Safety they could not do this, so then supplied a champagne bucket full of boiling water for us to use; dunk the meal in to and fish it out with a couple of forks. Not too sure which method is more dangerous!

Breakfast in the Lakes is key to supplying energy for scaling hills and dealing with the rain. A breakfast at Banerigg will equip most people with enough energy to walk for the day. A selection of locally sourced produce for your cooked breakfast from the monster sausages to the thick dry cured bacon (supplied by the Bacon Lady – who also produces handmade earrings which you can buy) to the numerous ways of having your eggs all of which are beautifully prepared. You can supplement this with a wonderful portion of muesli soaked in fruit juice; topped with yogurt and fresh fruit. There is also endless coffee, tea and toast to set you up for the day. We loved the Crème Eggs in our breakfast bowls on Easter Sunday, our son also enjoyed his special egg too!

We were able to venture out from Banerigg to a variety of walks locally. Martin also has a jetty across the road in front of the property off of which you can borrow a canoe for a trip around the lake, as a few of our number did. Getting across the A591, which runs outside the front of the house, can take a while if you hit the traffic as hotels; guest houses and campsites empty out, but nothing that cannot be overcome. After all you are in the Lakes; you should be relaxing and not getting too stressed!

Along with the earrings on display, which can be purchased, there is a selection of superb photographs taken in the area by Photographic Artist David Tarn (www.davidtarn.com). Some of these are also available to buy, but they are not marked and you have to ask Angela and Martin about these if you are interested.

Overall a very welcoming guest house and a location well sited for guests to explore the wonders of Grasmere and the Southern Lakes.

A group of us discovered Banerigg in 1989 and have stayed there for a few days every year since. Angela & Martin's hospitality is second to none. We are all fell walkers and arrive back on many occasions wet and bedragled but they do everything possible to make us feel as though we are arriving home. Nothing is too much trouble for them - one of our party fell in a bog this year and his clothes were washed and dried ready for the next day. Breakfasts are superb and set you up for the day. A great place in a great location!
