After an exhilarating walk round Crummock Water, we felt the need for a light, late lunch. My wife had noticed the a Travellers Rest, and we stopped there. We were greeted with a huge smile, shown to a table beside a roaring open fire, and coffee appeared rapidly. We ordered sandwiches, and within 5 minutes or so they were brought to us on bread boards. Well, they had to - they were big. And delicious. And with salad. Great service from the smiling lady. We'll go there again when next in Grasmere.

Just what a pub should be. Real ale, real fires, super food and friendly staff. The last reviewer was cleat unfortunate. My wife and I ate here 18th Feb. Lovely food ( fish and chips and steak and kidney pudding) warm and cosy, great Jennings beers and friendly staff all add up to a very good evening

We had been to the Travellers Rest a couple of times before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hence our return visit as guests of two friends.

For main courses we ordered two Crispy Pork Bellys, one Calves Liver and one Salmon, followed by Stick Toffee Pudding.

The Pork Belly appeared to have been cooked upside down. The thick layer of fat was almost raw and showed no sign of crispiness. The meat side was tough, almost burnt and difficult to digest. We complained and sent both back. The waiter said that the chef had mistakenly poured gravy over the fat, making it soft. The waiter returned with both dishes in about 5 minutes but there was no detectable improvement. Two nice cuts of meat completely ruined.

The Calves Liver was badly overdone to the extent that the edges were crispy. Edible but not how calves liver should be. Again a nice piece of offal spoiled.

The Salmon was nicely cooked and enjoyed.

The Sticky Toffee Pudding was a travesty. It appeared to be a slice of chocolate cake with a very sweet source poured over it. This dish is very popular in the Lake District and we have eaten it a number of times over the years but this was the worst by far.

We complained again on leaving but the barman/waiter did not seem interested.

Three days later, when our friends had left, we telephoned to explain our complaints in detail and said we would be reporting our experience to Tripadvisor. Once again, the barman/waiter, who now said he was also the manager, did not seem interested.

You have been warned.

Once again, another great Christmas and New Year spent at the Travellers Rest. Having experienced the Yuletide festivities here before, we had no hesitation in booking for the second year running and we were not disappointed. Christmas dinner was excellent with enough food to feed an army. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming and we would like to thank all the staff for ensuring we had a great time. In particular the manager Julian. His customer service skills are exemplary, attentive but not intrusive.and he always ensures that customers leave happy. He is a real credit to the business. Michaela, with a smile to brighten anyone's day is also worthy of a mention. Nothing is ever too much trouble for her and it is a pleasure to have her as out hostess. Matt, the 'new boy', is also a welcome addition. Always ready to serve and meet customers needs. Once again, a big thanks to all the staff at the Travellers Rest.

Positive

1. Idyllic setting
2. Rustic pub
3. Lamb shank fell of the bone
4. Easy to get a table at peak times
5. Food served quickly

Negative

1. Battered fish was overly saturated in oil
2. Wrong desert brought out and we were told the correct desert was not available only when we queried
3. Waiters not local which ruined the rustic Lake atmosphere
4. High cost and food was average so not value for money

Conclusion

Overall disappointed with food and cost and would not go back unless other restaurants were fully booked
