During a June 2012 Coast to Coast trek, we stayed at the Thorney How Independent Hostel in Grasmere and we were quite impressed. We had a private room (2 bunk beds) with a common washroom (empty except for us) and everything was very clean. Plus I really liked the common areas and the lovely adjacent parkland. It is only about a 5 minute walk to the heart of Grasmere.

It was by far the best value accommodation in pricey Grasmere.

Room Tip: Based on how good the private bunk room for 2 was, I would consider staying in the dorm room next time and save $.

Thanks Jane E - I hope the rest of your Coast 2 Coast trip goes well.

We also recognize that Coast 2 Coast walkers only want a single night stay. Something not all providers are willing to offer.

Best wishes

Taylor

If you are looking for luxury accommodation in Grasmere this is probably not it, but it doesn't advertise itself as such! Its budget accommodation of a good quality! The breakfast really did it for me! You can always tell a good hotel/hostel by the quality of the bed and its breakfast! Good quality sausage and standard hostel bunk bed type accommodation. Very helpful hosts and this hostel has something a bit more personal and cosy about it than other larger hostels. Its a little walk out of Grasmere but well worth the stroll for very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming staff. Good drying room facilities for walkers and excellent packed lunches- although for those with a horseradish aversion- take care when ordering the beef sandwich! I loved it but my boyfriend spat it out by Grisedale Tarn in shock! Be warned! Its not for the faint hearted. Really enjoyed my stay here. Decent shower facilities and nice communal areas.

Hi helensuz

Thanks so much for the lovely review. We'll pass on the horseradish comments to our staff and to check preferences with guests first :-)

We hope you enjoyed the rest of your journey too.

Best wishes

Taylor and Carolyn

Spent one night here in August and really enjoyed this friendly, family-run hostel. Ex-YHA but upgraded with very comfortable six bed rooms or doubles. Great breakfast and evening meals looked good value. We used the well-equipped kitchen to prepare our own meal which we ate in the dining room accompanied by a nice glass of wine from the bar. Would definitely stay here again.

Dear Ball-watcher, Thank you so much for taking the time to prepare and post your kind comments. It always gives the team at Thorney How great pleasure to provide a good service for guests and to see the rewards of our hard work. It is great to hear that you have been enjoying time at the bar, this was a new upgrade to our facilities along with the smarter dining room space completed earlier this year, which clearly, all our guests are enjoying!

Best wishes Taylor and Carolyn, Owners.

The Thorney How is a well equipped hostel in a beautiful part of the Lake District. Facilities include a decent kitchen, lounge area, cafe and bar. The staff are helpful and the hostel is clean. Rooms are simple but functional. The only down side is that it's a 15 / 20 minute walk into town and after a full day of walking up and down mountains the distance can take its toll!

It's very family friendly and apart from catering to our baby needs they were also able to cater for an adult with a variety of food allergies.
