“Second stay, but last.”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

We have just returned from a short stay at the grasmere red lion, having stayed a few years ago. How can a large, well known hotel group let such a nice hotel get so run down and shabby. Almost everything you see is worn out, bedrooms, bathrooms, lounges, furniture, etc. Lounge furniture all worn, carpets thread bare, in places over an inch from the walls with bare carpet grippers showing.Bedrooms poorly maintained, broken tiles re stuck in bathrooms, dirty paintwork, patched up ceilings, etc, need i go on. WiFi not working during our stay. There seems to be a total lack of, or extremely poor maintenence.I am by no means a snob, just working class, but this hotel has been spoiled by very poor standards and maintenance, it is in a lovely setting in prime location but what a shame. We wont be using it again.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for taking the time to share your feedback.

I would like to say that the hotel has been in administration for the past year and I agree certain areas were needing some attention. The hotel is now coming out of this low period and has some exciting plans for the future. It has also been very hard to start refurbishing areas with the hotel being so busy and full most nights. We have however started work this week on redecoration etc and hope to continue without disruption to our guest's.

I hope that you will be able to understand this situation and give us a try again next time you are in the area for us to deliver you a memorable experience.

Kindest Regards
Chris & Team

Just returned from a weekend at grasmere staying in the red lion hotel. Grasmere is gorgeous and the red lion is an excellent place to stay. The hotel was lovely. Stayed in room 306 which was a lot better than we were expecting after reading some of the reviews. You get exactly what you pay for. If you pay for three star don't expect four or five star. It was cosy comfortable and clean. The prices are extremely reasonable for the area. Would definately go back. The breakfast was very nice with plenty choice, the staff were very nice and attentitive. Had an evening meal on one night which again was very nice. Once again don't expect fine dining for twenty pound a head. What we had was far better than average.

As a regular to staying at this hotel it is a pleasure to write and say that our most recent stay was no exception to the usual great standard. The staff are all friendly and helpful, the food is excellent and the accommodation is clean and well appointed. The public rooms of the hotel are perhaps beginning to look a little tired but the change of ownership will I have no doubt generate a refurb. I would and do recommend this hotel,

my wife and I stayed here in feburary for three nights had a great time staff great, food spot on returned two weeks later for a weekend break and was not disappointed, great location for touring walking and shops we stay at this hotel often its friendly and always a warm welcome awaits you nothing is too much bother rebooked for easter cant wait good all round including price could do with a lick of paint ,but it is in process to be extensive refurbishment hope this does not reflect in big price rise ,because it is used by a wide variety of people ,keep up the good work all at red lion you cannot please everyone especially if they did not give a try but it would be a sad world if we were all perfect

We stayed at the Grasmere Red Lion Hotel in February to celebrate a family birthday. On arrival we were greeted by very friendly reception staff, the room was beautiful and recently refurbished with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. We ate in the restaurant and the pub over the 3 days we stayed, the food was lovely and the service was flawless. I would highly recommend this hotel when staying in the lakes - it is very hard to find a fantastic hotel right in the heart of a lake district village that offers as much as the Grasmere Red Lion does.

Room Tip: Can't beat the Ruskin!

We were greeted by a very friendly and efficient receptionist , however we were a bit disappointed by the size of our standard room and bathroom , both pretty small. The room looked freshly painted and was clean. Breakfast was a really good selection of cold and cooked items and friendly staff. Internet was only reliable in the public areas

Room Tip: Pay the extra to have a more spacious room

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff here at the Grasmere Red Lion.

With regards to your room, with the hotel being a old inn all the rooms are very different in size and shape.
We do hope you will visit us again and when booking please contact our reception team who will advise you on the best room that ticks all the boxes for you.

Kind Regards

..... and booked again for April taking my two friends with me who also stayed last year. You can park your car up and not touch it again until you leave as fabulous walking from the front door for all levels of walker. I must stay in over fifty hotels a year but this is the one I choose to return to over and over again for my own holiday. I find the staff without exception friendly and welcoming. Breakfasts excellent and set you up for a long walk on the fells.

Room Tip: Must have stayed in most rooms over the years but definitely worth upgrading to Silverhow, Helm Crag...
