“Fine old coaching inn”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Although it's a hotel in a big chain (Best Western), it's clearly not a generic new-build hotel: this is an old (18/19th Century??) coaching inn in the heart of Grasmere, which is a lovely village. The building itself has a lot of character. Our twin room was nice and spacious, but the en-suite bathroom was really cramped and looked like it needed some attention (cracked/missing tiles, that sort of stuff).

Stayed here with my 7-yr old daughter; we were in Grasmere to do some walking in the hills, but I wanted to stay at a hotel with an indoor pool in case the weather turned out bad (which it often can do in the Lakes). The pool here is not very big but while we were here hardly anyone used it and we had it to ourselves most of the time. Not the hottest of pools. Our room was on the front of the main building, one floor above ground level, facing out over the street -- it was summer so we had the window open and people outside the bar drinking/smoking were audible early in the evening but it wasn't a problem to us, and no road noise to speak of. We really enjoyed our stay here; daughter loved the spa-bath.

We ate dinner in the bar -- it was bustling, good atmosphere, the service was good and the food was fine though nothing exceptional.

The breakfasts were very nice, staff very attentive, but the room in which the breakfasts are served was really cramped, loads of tables&chairs and not a lot of space inbetween them.

There are several nice hotels in Grasmere, but very few of them have swimming pools. The prices here make it a lot cheaper than the nearby alternatives, and I think this hotel is very decent value. We came away with happy memories and we'd certainly stay here again.

We stayed for a couple of days in August. We were upgraded to a Club Room which included a separate living area and a spa bath. Right from the start the staff were very friendly and helpful. Having booked late on-line they rang within hours to advise they may have trouble meeting the 2 night stay in the same room. However, they didn't leave it at that and they did manage to accommodate us in the same upgraded room. The room was spacious, clean and tidy. breakfast was huge and tasty. We ate one night in the bar and were very pleased with our meal. Grasmere is a magical place in our opinion and staying in the Red Lion Hotel only serves to enhance that magical feeling (BK14725/1/1)

we stayed here, a family of 4 and 1 dog, we had a family room that was clean comfortable, rather warm i think because it was over the pool area, which seemed odd because the water in the pool was quite chilly! ( made us swim faster!better exercise!) we were only b and b, so ate out, our breakfast however was very good, and plentiful! it was great to be able to take our dog to such a lovely hotel.

Once again, excellant service from the Red Lion. I travelled with my disabled Parents this time and we were given the Helm Crag Suite & the Silver Howe suite. Fantastic rooms. I also took the dog, who had the run of the place and was easily accommodated by the Hotel. The food is always top notch and the service is second to none. Waiting on Staff, Klaudia, Lazio and Tomas really make you feel special and they could not have done enough for us. We had our meals in the Conservatory due to the fact we had the dog and we got the same service in there as we would have had in the main Restaurant.... Love this place, defo reccommend especially dog owners... Loads of places to exercise the dog close by.

Room Tip: All the rooms here are good, can't fault any of them. The Helm Crag & Silver Howe suites ove...

We got this late via booking.com. They took two scruffy walkers in their stride and even had a drying room for our stinky boots. The turkey sandwich and buttered scone made for a superior packed lunch. Didn't use the pool but handy if you are in need. The bar food (confit of duck) was quick and quite tasty. All in an enjoyable stay.

We have just returned from a 1 night stay. The staff were very friendly and the location is superb. Room was adequate although the bathroom was a bit shabby (it needed re tiled or at least re grouted). Having said that, it was clean? The lounge area is a nice relaxing place but smells a bit fusty and the water running down the wall in one corner suggests there are damp problems. It needs a revamp and I believe that there is one scheduled over the next couple of months. Breakfast was pleasant. Overall an enjoyable visit, hard working and friendly staff made up for the decor.
