“Great staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Stayed here over CHRISTMAS for 5 days. Decorated beautifully, staff very friendly and helpful, making for a relaxed atmosphere, large room with comfortable bed, food excellent with great staff, brilliant entertainment and very helpful housekeeper. A very enjoyable break for our 30th wedding anniversary. This hotel has a great team.

Yet another visit to Grasmere and the Red Lion, always found it a nice clean comfortable welcoming hotel, the pool is a welcome place after a good day out, the rooms are always clean and nicely presented, no problems getting wifi wether in room or down in lounge areas, the lamb inn is a nice bar area and really nice food at a very reasonable price too. The location is spot on right in the centre of the village although not always a parking place there are plenty around the village. We will definately return again.

Just returned from a three night break at the Red Lion, our fourth stay there. This is probably our favourite UK hotel for a short break, principally for its location right in the centre of the village with easy access to a range of walking from a stroll around the lake to as high and wide as you wish to go followed by a pint in the Lamb Inn, the hotel's pub. It is also well placed to visit other areas of the Lake District. The hotel isn't perfect, some of the rooms are a bit on the small side but that's not unexpected given the style of the place although all rooms seem to have spa baths which are great for a soak after a walk. The staff have always been great, very friendly and helpful, including the lads in the Lamb. The lounge area to the right of the reception is very comfortable for sitting with a drink or cup of tea to read a book or newspaper if you just want to chill. We haven't used the leisure facilities, always forget to take swimwear but the pool looks very inviting. The Lamb was closed for refurbishment on our previous visit and sadly I don't think it has been an improvement, it feels somewhere between a lounge bar and a restaurant but not certain which and seems to have lost the feel of a village pub which is a bit of a shame in my opinion and it didn't appear to be used much by locals, although that observation is only based on this one stay, but it is comfortable and the food we had on the two nights we ate there was good and reasonably priced. Overall a very welcoming hotel in a lovely Lakeland village to which we will no doubt return.

Room was dirty & grubby, carpet was threadbare!! - clearly had not been cleaned
Bathroom was also dirty - clearly had not been cleaned
Given another room (without any problem or delay), possible upgrade (family room)
Ran a bath (new room) - no hot water (told nobody else had this problem! - our problem; they then said there must be a blown fuse - just have to wait, 30 min should be OK)
Room was TOO hot - difficulty sleeping
A number of broken tiles on the stairs to / from the pool (slip / trip / and fall hazard)
pool was cold (only two chairs provided)
Sauna and steam rooms were cold
We did get an apology from the manager (reception staff were poor)
No parking
We have stayed at this hotel in the past - no problems; this time VERY POOR - we will never stay here again!

This was our second time, this time we had our Cocker Spaniel, Harry in tow. The hotel is bang in the centre of Grasmere. Check in was a breeze and our room had great views of the surrounding countryside. The rooms while certainly are not luxurious they are more than adequate. Since we were there last they've changed the hotel bar and spruced it up a bit.

In conclusion a great hotel in a great little village.

Just had 3 night stay. Hotel is looking tired in some areas, has a warm lounge area in reception which has a relaxing feel about it. Staff are polite but smiles for their guests sadly lacking (apart from Molly). Our room & bathroom were tired and on the small side as was the bed. I did not risk a bath as the fixed anti slip mat had ground in dirt and dust was visible. The claim that all rooms have wifi is very misleading I was unable to get a connection anywhere in the hotel. Spa facilities are welcome after a day walking however the sauna does need maintenance as door doesn't fully close and one of benches is loose. Also misleading is the brochure that states there are log fires - I didn't see any. Breakfast is tasty served to you ie cooked breakfast is not buffet style.

Booked half price room on internet for a 2 night post Christmas/New Year break. Hotel is in a good location and has decent facilities. Service was up to standard, although our room was not made up until about 1600hrs and after we had nudged reception. That said, room was fine. Bed and TV were on small side and bathroom very hot but no real issues. We ate in the attached pub and had 2 decent meals - my recommendation is the Steak and Ale pie with hand cut chips and veg which was good value for money.

Overall - good value at the half price rate. Full rate in winter would have been a bit steep.
