Owner description: William Wordsworth is Britain's best-loved poet. His life was a series of adventures and his early experiences made him into a rebel. Orphaned as a child, he went to University, travelled across Europe during the French Revolution, fell in love with an older French woman and then returned to turn English literature on its head with his radical ideas and poems in language that anyone could understand. He moved to Dove Cottage in 1799 and stayed for nine years, writing some of the most famous poetry in the English language, inspired by the landscape and the people he met. Visitors can take guided tours of Dove Cottage, wander in the gardens he designed and planted with his sister and discover his incredible life story in the museum next door (included in admission). Special exhibitions change regularly and family activities are integrated into the experience, with family friendly events during the school holidays.

There is a guided tour of Dove Cottage itself which is well worth it. At £7.25 per adult, the 10 minute tour was a bit rushed but very informative and the guide really gave us a good insight into the daily lives of the Wordsworths in that tiny space. The adjoining Museum is also very informative and interesting. All in all, a worthwhile trip. Beware: no wheelchair access.

Although we are hardly literature enthusiasts we found Dove Cottage very interesting, with the guided tour being fascinating. Well worth a visit.

Home of William Wordsworth. Loved the history value in a short guided tour - house is tiny so it had to be a short tour! Guide was from America which put me off to start but she certainly knew her stuff and was passionate about her subject, so she was forgiven for not being English! LOL. The garden was beautiful and so inspirational. We sat for ages in the viewing shack above the garden looking out at views Wordsworth would have been inspired by so long ago.

Am ashamed to say this place is less than 20 miles away and this was my first visit. Very enjoyable tour in a small group with a guide who knew her stuff. Ticket price includes entrance to Dove Cottage itself and also The Wordsworth Museum. Highly recommended and parking at the cottage is a very reasonable £1 for 3 hours. There is also a cafe bit we didn't try this.

Despite having lived locally for my entire life I'd never visited Dove Cottage! Today I visited with another friend and booked for the tour. Along with others we were taken around the house by a girl called Lauren who made the house come alive and was very knowledgeable about its history and confidently answered any questions asked of her.

The house is very well cared for and to that end I was more than happy to Gift Aid my visit so it is kept that way for other generations to visit.

I can also recommend the adjoining museum for a visit to enhance the experience. I'm so glad I took the time to visit this historical site!
