We hired the the whole building for 24 friends over New Years, and it was fantastic! The owners are very accommodating and helped us quite a bit in working out the logistics (suggesting the supermarkets that delivered to the door, answering ALL of our questions about the amenities, finding a caterer for New Years Eve, etc.) The rooms are comfortable and clean, basic, but all you need. The view from the living room is beautiful and we were out walking in the hills every day. The hostel is stocked with loads of board games and books to keep everyone occupied. I highly recommend it for a night or a week. Its location is perfect for walkers.

Room Tip: I recommend the Riddell room (sleeps 6). It's warm and cosy.

Unlike a hostel environment, Grasmere independent hostel feels like a big cosy home: with warm clean and comfortable rooms, with an added bonus of en suite to every room, so even if there were 26 six of us there was never a time when we needed to queue for the shower/toilet :) which was extremely convenient. Our favourite pass time was in the lounge with a round skyward windows to take in the views over Grasmere and the hills behind it felt like we were in a boat out on a voyage :) The chairs very comfortable and a big round table perfect for 'working' or playing games :). there are ample number of magazines, book and games.
On arrival Dave gifted us a local map which proved extremely helpful and informative, he provided us with weather forecasts everyday. For those of us that cannot disconnect and fear withdrawal symptoms from the world wide web, A free internet service is available, a PC and WiFi available if you need to get connected 24 hours a day ;). We loved the Sauna room and the spacious drying room where we could hide away our soggy clothes after a beautiful explore of the surroundings. The kitchen was well equipped, we cooked pretty much the whole week for 27 persons lunch and dinner and found it was hassle free, everything we needed to cook or bake was there including plenty of Clean tea towels and dish cloths, kitchen rolls. And I should mention the bathrooms were kept clean and tidy everyday!!!

Thank you Dave and Sally for being wonderful and accommodating. If any of us returned to the area we would certainly return to stay in the hostel/cottages.

Stayed there the weekend of 18-20 January 2013 for my birthday with a group of 22 friends. An absolutely excellent hostel. The rooms were great and all bar one is en suite, and that one has a bathroom next door. Location was great - just off the main road - so ideal if weather is a bit inclement. Loved the fact that the dining kitchen and the common room are both big enough for everyone staying in the hut to congregate so the group doesn't HAVE to split up. Best of all though was the service from Dave and Sally who run the hostel. They were helpful and accommodating right from the start - even booked our meal at the Travellers Rest down the road on the Saturday night for us. Would definitely return and recommend it to all my friends.

A warm welcome from the moment we arrived. Dave gave us a full tour of the hostel and showed us to our clean, comfortable room (radiators had been turned on in advance to ensure it was lovely and warm!) The hooks on the bunks v useful for hanging clothes/towels on and the room was en suite with a hot shower, another radiator, sink, toilet, etc. Very convenient.
All the local information you need in reception including maps, weather forecasts, bus timetables etc. Bus stop is just a couple of hundred metres away and there's regular buses to Keswick/Kendal. A PC and WiFi available if you need to get connected :-) Great spacious drying room with boot drying bags.
Very well equipped kitchen with plenty of nice, new clean crockery and cutlery, pans (including huge ones for big parties), kettles (with free tea and coffee). Clean tea towels and dish cloths, kitchen roll etc. You don't need to take a thing apart from the food! Though there is a handy pub (Travellers Rest) just 5 mins walk down the road where we had a hot meal for about £10-12 each.
The best part of the hostel is the lounge room up on the top floor - with huge skyward windows to take in the views over Grasmere and the hills behind (and check out the weather conditions!) Lots of comfy chairs, a big table, a TV and loads of magazines, book and games.
I can't think of anything to improve this place! Thanks for a lovely stay.

Built with local raw material, the Grasmere Independent Hostel gives you the perfect English countryside experience, especially for foreigner who only have 1-2 days spend on Like District. The hostel is surrounded by private meadow, and Sally (the owner) even keeps sheep! It is wonderful to wake up in baa (by sheep) in the morning.

The hostel located near road A591, which means you could easily find it when traveled by car, and the big car park in the backyard enables you sleep well without worrying the safety. For traveler rely on public bus, you have to prepare your own meal ingredients in town centre before you reach the hostel, because sometimes you need to wait a long time for the bus. You can make the most of facility provided in kitchen, such as oven and gas stove (but seems no oil or butter).

Sally is live in another independent house next to the hostel, which you can keep your own living schedule and have much privacy without disturbing the host. Sally is really nice and always ready to give you advice on local transportation. Came into the room on top floor, you will definitely amazed by the skylight (please forgive the man who had dreamed about it for a lifetime).

Room Tip: The room on top floor, which has skylight and private bathroom.

I brought my two lads here to stay for a budget break so we could enjoy a cheap walking holiday. Dave and Sally, who run manage the accomodation, were extremely friendly and welcoming, and helpful in every way. The conversion from an old farm building into hostel accomodation has been done very well and makes it feel part of the spirit of the lake district. The upstairs lounge has great views, a tv, plenty of seating and games, and makes a nice place to socialise in the evening. The views are wonderful, you can sit outside the kitchen with a nice cuppa enjoying the scenery and farm buildings. The kitchen is well equipped and the dining area nice and contemporary. Helvellyn is accessible right from this location, and Grasmere, a five minute drive away, a lovely village to explore and go for walks around the lake. The upstairs lounge has great views, a tv, plenty of seating and games, and makes a nice place to socialise in the evening. We loved it here and made friends with a really nice chap called Nigel. I would heartily recommend this hostel .

I stayed here for august bank holiday weekend with a group from my church of 19 people! We had a brilliant time. The hostel is clean, cosy and very well equipped. The owners were really helpful with giving us useful tips on the local area and it is great value for money! It is also very conveniently situated in grasmere for great walks in the local area. We especially loved the upstairs lounge area which was great for hanging out, playing games and admiring the lovely view through the round window. Thank-you for a great stay. I'd highly recommend it!
