“Great base for Lakeland walking”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

We spent 8 nights at the pub over Easter. Our room [4] was clean and comfortable with an amazing shower! The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food was wonderful pub grub but with some very well cooked and tasty "specials". The pub's own Bluebird ale was awesome [husband's comment], I loved the Stowford Press cider. The bar had a real buzz and I loved the real dog friendliness of the place. Lovely and highly recommended for a walking break in stunning country. A real family atmosphere.

We had an Easter weekend stay here, and stayed in room 1 in the annex, a comfortably sized room on the ground floor, for a couple and our black lab. I was a bit nervous that one of our windows overlooked the car park, but it was absolutely fine. The room facilities are in good order, very clean and tea and coffee provided. A very comfortable bed! Would recommend they put a boot rack in the hall to save their lovely carpets :-)

It was particularly cold on our visit, the the room was plenty warm enough, however they kindly provided a booster heater - just in case !

It is in the perfect location, very central to everything in Coniston, all the other bars and eateries close by and a short walk to buses and then you can walk directly from here to explore the fells and Lake with ease.

The staff, particularly Les and the lady that served our (very nice but very big (2 egg, 2 bacon, 2 saussies, fried bread and unlimited toast)) breakfast, were all very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. If you fancy alternative brekkie I would recommend very highly the little cafe across the way, I think it was called Couryard garden!?!?!

In the main bar/restaurant it gets very busy at certains times of the day, but there is a nice quiet residents area if you want to escape the noise, but frankly it was fine! Food was probably the best we tasted in comparison to the rest of central Coniston and they offer a great selection of beers all from the Coniston brewery out the back! Would highly recommend trying the 'tasters' served in 3 small glasses so you can have a little try of each of your choice! They accept dogs at anytime!

It was all very reasonably priced too, especially since some other hotels and bars in the Lakes can be a bit on the pricey side. Would recommend!

We're just back from a stay at The Black Bull hotel in the lovely Cumbrian village of Coniston where we had the pleasure of sleeping in the most comfortable bed ever. Our room was one of four in the quiet courtyard next to the beck (and the brewery). From one of the windows in the eaves our view was the snow covered Old Man when we opened the curtains in the morning while, from the other, we could check out the village coming to life. Bliss. I also loved the little tea pot which meant I could make a proper cup of tea - why don't all hotels still do this?

We opted for the (huge) hearty cooked breakfast (which was so big we needed to go and lie down again) and which was served by one of the unfailingly friendly and professional staff in the main hotel building (a 16th century coaching inn complete with fireplaces, horse brasses and big deep window seats).

The bar serves all the beers from the adjacent world famous Coniston Brewing Company microbrewery, the certificates of all the awards they've won are displayed on the walls and mantelpieces. You can buy small glasses of 3 beers served on a 'beer bat' if you're not sure which one to get first. Bluebird is a good start (it won the Olympic gold of beer awards - CAMRA's supreme champion beer - in 1998, as did No.9 Barleywine in 2012 although you won't need a lot of that - it's a strong one).

Impossible to recommend this place highly enough. Go - you won't be disappointed.

Had a wonderful break at the Black Bull. The Staff are friendly and helpful and always have a smile for everyone.
The food is first class. Breakfast is very well cooked and well presented, i have a thing about eggs and the way they are cooked, these were perfect.
We took our little dog with us and he was also made very welcome.
We had a lovely room which was to the back of the pub, by the Brewery. It was cozy, clean and warm.
The beer, as my husband tells me was first class, can't go wrong with The Coniston Brewery being behind the pub.
If you want a pleasant friendly place to stay, I can thoroughly recommend the Black Bull

Room Tip: If you have a pet, the seperate rooms to the rear of the pub are wonderful.

We stayed at the black bull in February 2013 as a couple with our dog.

We were expecting the room to be a little scruffy with it being a dog friendly place. However we were very surprised to find that the room was not only spotless - it was cream carpets, walls, bedding! Pleasantly surprised but also worried about the muddy dog! Luckily the weather stayed dry, as did the dog and the room was cleaned each of the three days we were there.

The bathroom was smallish but clean. The shower was nice and powerful. The bed was very large but be warned, it is very hard. I can usually sleep anywhere and tend not to even notice a bed but this was a little uncomfortable.

We had breakfast each morning and the staff were very helpful even when we were being quite particular with our requests!

We also had 2 evening meals in the pub. My husband recommends the bluebird xb real ale. The food was well cooked, tasty and hearty - just what was needed after a day walking. It is pricier but actually we also went to the Sun Inn for one evening meal and whilst this was cheaper, it was no where near as good quality. You pay for what you get.

Overall, a very lovely stay. We did get a winter deal of 3 nights for the price of 2 and at £100 per night I'm not sure the value is good enough to stay there at full price.

After one of the more interesting drives I have had in my life, the location is superb and the staff without exception very friendly and helpful. Our room was spotless. The beer (brewed in their own microbrewery) was superb (I didn't have the chance to try every one, but those I did ...) the food was excellent and I saw another customer recieve a full refund for something she did not like-excellent service! Not cheap, but where in the Lakes is? We had a cracking 20th anniversary there, the food was well presented & very tasty and did I mention the beer...? Minus points - they do not appear to store their wine at optimum temperature - we had a bottle of warmish white with a huge bucket of ice our first night which only approached correct temperature as we finished it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the annex and also an upstairs room. We had room 1 on the ground floor and our nei...
