“Perfect introduction to the Lake District”
Reviewed September 17, 2010

After having spent the best part of a day trying to find a hotel/B&B anywhere in the Lake District that would take 1 night bookings over the bank holiday, I very nearly gave up hope. The Waterhead Hotel, Coniston, was the only place that literally didn't laugh in my face!

Lottie was very helpful and informed me that they had plenty of availability, and I subsequently booked one family room and a double room.

Having later read the other reviews on Trip Advisor, and also a little concerned as to why they weren't fully booked and also taking one night bookings over the bank holiday, I did begin to wonder what we had let ourselves in for.

I can honestly say that I had absolutely NO reason to be concerned. The location of the hotel was absolutely stunning and was just a short walk away from the jetty at Lake Coniston. But more importantly the hotel was perfect too. Our welcome was very friendly. We were given the keys to our rooms and were told that the family room had a mountain view and the double room had a lake view. (All this having been explained on booking). Both views were stunning. The rooms were spotlessly clean, and very nicely decorated. The family room was large with a double bed and also a bunk bed. Tea and coffee making facilities were a nice touch and also flat screen TV in the rooms too.

Nick gave us lots of information on where to go and visit as we were only staying the one night. But I would have been very happy to have sat in the grounds for the whole day, very relaxing with beautiful views.

Breakfast in the morning was absolutely fine, with a choice of fresh fruit juice, cereals, pastries, jams, tea, coffee etc, followed by a very nicely cooked full English breakfast. We all like our food and would be the first to say if this wasn't up to scratch, but believe me, it was delicious.

All in all it was a very pleasant stay, friendly service with spotlessly clean rooms and a lovely breakfast. What more could you ask for? To all of those people who gave this hotel a bad review, next time book a 5* hotel. I will certainly be returning to the Waterhead Hotel and have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to my family and friends.

Friendly comfortable Hotel where nothing seems like it is too much trouble for the staff. Rooms were clean and comfortable and the bathrooms were a very good standard, not out of place in a Hotel of higher star rating. Topped off by lovely views and a good breakfast. Worth finding.

Not at all what we expected - lake views to us do not mean overlooking three big bins, scruffy field and row of trees with glimpses of blue in between dense forest. The 'Suites' were in the back yard of the hotel, accessed via a staircase that smelt of cat. The rooms smelt of stale smoke even though they are non smoking. Very small sitting room which like the bedroom is directly onto the main road. Absolutely no soundproofing inbetween rooms so we heard all of next doors conversations - thank goodness they did not snore! All in all no views at all. So pleased we were not staying long.
Restaurant was expensive with no childrens' meals, food ok but not worth the price charged - also was no choice - 3 courses at one price with no options bar supplements for steak etc. One positive thing was the friendly staff.
we will not be returning,

We had none of the negative experiences mentioned by some other reviewers. Our room had been recently decorated and was very clean with comfortable beds. We had all the facilities we needed such as tea and coffee, hairdryer and a clean bathroom. The reception staff were helpful and very friendly as were the cleaners. The cooked breakfast was pronounced as good by my fussy teenagers, but our poached eggs tasted of vinegar!
The location is beautiful and very quiet. We enjoyed our lake cruise and a visit to the local museum. The pubs in Coniston do very good evening meals.

My partner booked us in for a one-night stay, including breakfast, as a surprise at the Waterhead Hotel in Coniston. We were slightly delayed in meeting the latest check in time of 9:00pm, but upon contacting the staff they reassured us that it wasn't a problem and that they would see us when we arrived, which was around 9:30pm. After checking in, we drove back into the village to try our luck at finding anywhere still serving food at that time and to our luck we stumbled upon Harry's restaurant where the staff were extremely obliging and the food was top notch!
Once back at the hotel we moved our bags to our room that was not only a very generous size but spotlessly clean. The decor was quite minimal but still maintained that traditional feel and the bathroom was gigantic, easily big enough to fit the same bathroom suite in again at the other end. All this put together with a big comfy bed gave for a good night’s sleep. For breakfast in the morning there was a good selection to choose from including cereals and croissants to a full English or continental breakfast all served with a smile.
In terms of location the hotel is situated just along the road leaving Coniston village, roughly a 5-minute walk away, making it a perfect base for us to begin our hike over the Coniston Fells the following morning.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing break away or a good base from which to explore the Lakes, I would definitely recommend the Waterhead Hotel with its excellent value for money set in its beautiful picturesque setting.

First off the lobby attendant didn't know which floor our room was on. He gave us the keys and came with us to find it.
Once found the keys didn't fit the lock so took another 30 minutes to locate the correct keys.
Once the door was opened the heat hit us, the attendant asked me if the cental heating was on (which it wasn't), it turned out that the room was directly above the kitchen and all the heat from there came directly up to our room.
We opened the windows to cool the temp down only to be hit by the stench of cooking from the kitchen and the smell of cooking fat. There was a large extractor fan which ran from 7.30 am to at least 10.30 in the evening and sounded as though there was a raod cleaner permanatly outside our room.
In the evening the bar didn't have enough change to pay back for our drinks so we were left £1.10 out of pocket and this also happened to other people, so the bar man made a nice tip that evening!
The hotel itself is lovely and in wonderfull grounds, but given the poor location of our room, i will not be returning.
On mentioning the room upon checkout the attendant said next time you come ask for a room at the front, I said don't worry there won't be a next time!

Stayed here for 2 nights,23,24 May,2010.
Everything was excellent, the friendly welcome,t he newly refurbished room (try for a Lake or Front view room) , to the nicely cooked and presented meals - we had 2 full Cumbrian Breakfasts, other choices available, and 2 good 3 course evening meals again with a good menu to choose from.
The hotel has lovely grouds, even heas it's own landing stage where the Lake cruiser calls several times a day.

We would love to stay there again.
