“Surprising good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

Lots to see and more especially the relics from the Donald Campbell accident with loads of background on Donald and John Ruskin himself which adds interest across the gender divide with lace exhibits and some stuff for the kids as well as well as mini village in the back garden. Unlike some attractions in the lake district I reallly felt this was worth a stop and the money

“Very nice museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

The museum offers a very goos insight into the story of Coniston and men who made its history.

Definitely worth going to see it, especially after a long walk!

“A Vision Of Beauty For Autumnal Viewers”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

The House and gardens are well worth a visit. It was interesting to learn of this C19 thinker and patron of the arts and to see his works. The Gardens are only a small climb and worth the trip, as is the short walk to the harbour which Ruskin & his associates built.

“An unusual mix- but really interesting and good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

4 main themes to this fascinating museum:
a) Local life and geology ( the area has many abandoned copper mines and was famous for lace making)
b) Donald Campbell's life and water speed records. This is an excellent exhibition with lots of mementos (including the remains of the suit Campbell wore when he tragically died, recovered from the lake with his body some 34 years after his death, video footage, many photographs and lots of information about Bluebird K7
c) Philanthropist, artist, and intellectual John Ruskin
d) Arthur Ransome, and the boat that he described in Swallows and Amazons which was based on Coniston Water
My only frustration with it was there was lots of stuff, but not all of it was described- particularly in the Donald Campbell exhibition.
There is no cafe, which is a shame, but there is a shop.
A really enjoyable museum, that is a good 2 hour indoor attraction for a rainy day.

“John Ruskin captured my heart”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

Don't miss these things: the film about his life tells you what an advanced visionary he was, his gardens are sweet, and the walk up behind the house, all the way to the top of the fell, gives a great view of Old Man Coniston. Take a full afternoon to do all of this if it's sunny. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
